Trout Yakfishing 24MAR12-25MAR12
Where: Lake Cuyamaca
When: 24MAR12-25MAR12 Target Species: Trout How: Carolina Rig. Used 2-4 lb flurocarbon line. size 14-18 treble hooks with 1/4 oz sliding egg weight. Orange or Chartuse Powerbait worked best. Just like bass fisihg, we paddled/peddled and looked for cover near shore or ledges in deep water to drop our Powerbait rigs. I also used MEPS spinners and caught most of my trout with it. This is probably my first "fishing report" on BWE. So here it goes.... My buddies are yakfishing nubs. They are afraid of the idea of kayakfishing the ocean so we decided to take baby steps and start off in the local lakes. Lake Cuyamaca is a treat for those that grew up lake fishing. Outside of the lake is acres on acres of wild turkey and deer just standing around. We even stopped just to take pictures. One of the deer even walked up to us...I think close enough where i couldve reached out and gave it a pet. Once we arrived we expected for lots of people. Nope, it was empty. Not a soul in site except for the park rangers. Soon after launching the yaks, I decided to toss the Mepps around. I got hooked up with a good 4 pounder. Soon I hear the "wahooooos!" from both my buddys. They are also hooked up on something big. My bro was hooked up on an 8.5 pound rainbow (huge for a trout, especially on 2 lb test). All I can hear from him is "HELP this thing huge! I dont know how to land this thing!" LOLOLOL I began thinking, how in the hell is he gonna land one of the LJ YT or WSB if he is having trouble landing an 8 lb trout. So I peddled over to see what I can do. I walked him through about letting the rod do all the work and once the fish is along side and tired, to net his ass. Anyhow here are some pics...
