La Jolla trip 8/13/2011
Launched at the cove at 5:30AM to ankle-slappers, flat ocean and overcast skies. Stayed overcast most of the day.
Made about 8 mackeral a piece for bait, a few good sized Spanish and large to porn-sized greenies, all leftovers will be saved for the upcoming bug season. Trolled with the macks high and low, all morning for nothing. We may have seen one yellow puddling, but whatever it was, it was unresponsive to the iron. To not have the day be a total loss, meat-wise, we tried bottom fishing. Aaron also soaked a live mack, just in case the yellows showed for an afternoon bite, no such luck. Aaron catches bottom fish fast, with Julie starting slow. She ends up passing him, with 7 to his 6. Not unusual, she out-fishes him, he taught her too well. While bottom-fishing we saw what looked like a Fin-back whale a 1/2 mile away, nice when mother nature makes a showing. Not so nice, having to deal with a 6 foot, seven gill shark Julie fought. She brought it alongside her kayak, but we decided to bust it off, instead of trying to retrieve the $6 jig he had in his mouth. Ended up with 12 rockcod (variety),and 1 sheephead, together. Here are a couple of photos. On the water shot Driveway shot Landed about 7:00PM, 13 ½ hours on the water. Yeah, we’re sore today. Picked up a pound of shrimp on the way home to go with the sheephead and 2 smallest rockcod, all done tempura-style. Fish tacos to come later. Aaron has been prone to sun-poisoning on his shins the past 3 years, anyone recognize his shin protectors in the 1st photo?
