New to the boards. La Jolla 1/5-1/6
Hi guys, new to Big Water's Edge and first time fishing down in La Jolla this week. I'm normally around the Malibu area.
If anyone is interested in learning La Jolla, I highly recommend looking into Josh Pruitt's guide service. I learned more in a couple days than I have all year. From fixing bad habits, correct tackle application, proper rigging, reading sonar signs, fishing tactics, local and general fishing knowledge... it was amazing. Got my new gear and was ready to go. The fishing was slow, and it didnt look like any YT or WSB were caught the 2 days I was out there. But it definitely wasnt because we didnt try. I havent fished so hard, ever. But from what what I gained, I wasnt bummed or put off... I'm ready to go again! First day I meet Josh at the Launch at 4:30am... I understand "grey light" ... but this is just crazy! After a couple hours of fishing: We got out to the fishing grounds and hunted WSB, got one solid hit... and then nothing. We fished from 5am to about 330pm, he had to get off the water early. The day mostly looked like this: Josh: "This fish do this and this like this when they are like this and sometimes like this, and you have to do "A/B" here but "C" really over there, most people do "D", but really doesnt do a damn thing." Me: "ok, ok, ya, got it, huh? uh huh, ya, wow, really?" Wildlife was amazing, porpoises, dogs, whales all over the place all day long. After 3 hours of sleep and a looong day on the water I was hurting. I figured I was just going to wake up the next morning and drive home... As I'm getting in the car, I say... Its nice out, Ive had 11 hours sleep, and I dont have Sh*t to do today... get back on the water! I head down to the launch again at 930am and plan just to do a few hours of "light" fishing. Josh calls me and asks if I made it out early or headed home. I tell him I neeeded the sleep and just about to launch. So, he meets me on the water. All hopes for a light day of fishing go out the window. We go to make bait and he sees my 5 macks... Im ready! No? I need 20 macks!? uuugh... oook. straight 40lb mono Yo-Yo high-speed reel for the YT out in the open, they cant make it to structure and you can pull hard and the stretch will let them freak out without getting much line. Braid/mono for fishing around/in the kelp. Once again, slow fishing and 1 mangled mack. Instead of getting off the water at 2ish... we were off at 7pm. Porpoises and whales coming right up next to you after sunset is triiiipy. Weather was amazing and sunset even better. |
