OHHHHH WHATA FEELING!
Launched LJ at about 5am yesterday with a little wind and not too crowded either. Made bait easily including the stars of the day, some big fat greenies. Flylined one on 40lb mono and the other on a carolina with spectra and a 3' flouro topshot. Just started paddling west, the weather improved and had to bust out the shades. Not much bird action or bait coming to the surface like the last couple of weeks I've been out there. Finally got to a spot where there was tons of bait on the meter.
All of a sudden zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz on my flylined rig. Grabbed it out of the holder and put my thumb on the spool (this is called a learning process for rookies) Just a few seconds after grabbing that rod my other one goes zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, double hooked! Wow, I knew I better bring one of them in after something stole my surface iron the previous week on 25lb line. Start to bring in the first and my mono got hung up in the kelp and wasn't making anymore progress. Put that one aside and loosened the drag a little. Grabbed the rod with spectra and started to bring it in and this guy wasn't too close to the kelp. I got him too the boat pretty quick. Finally got to break in the gaffer! Game clipped him and tied him up so he wouldn't get away. I go back to the other rod which still had him on the hook. After a few minutes of wrestling with him and the kelp...SNAP! My rod broke in half, then my line snagged the split end and broke off. That was the end of my day, it was nice to paddle in at 7:15 in the morning with something good for lunch. Definately not the biggest WSB out there. And my friends can stop calling me skunky for a little while. I just started fishing and yaking at the beginning of winter last year. I couldn't tie a knot when I started out. Just like to thank everyone on here for your informative posts and keeping my spirits high. Now I can go out there with a little more confidence. Thanks to everyone for the pics on and off the water!
