5/18 maiden voyage
This is not my first kayak trip since I rented a few times a Prowler 13 from Sport Chalet in Marina Del Rey but since they are closing I was finally able to convince the wife that I needed to buy my own.
Looked around for a bit and found a smoking deal for a Malibu Kayak X-Factor that I purchased a week ago. It came fully rigged with fish finder, bait tank and a few additional flush mounts already installed. Went to Cabrillo and launched at the ramp at 6am with my buddy Snags. First thing we noticed upon exiting the car is that the weathermen had lied again and it was much windier than what was predicted but that wasn't going to stop us. Trolled some big lures along the bottom by the fishing pier and the earlier parts of the wall but once we got closer to the lighthouse we started tossing lures into the kelp. A few short bites but nothing stuck on the inside. We rounded the lighthouse and went to the outside of the wall. Current was ripping and the only way to fish in 1 place close to the wall was holding on to kelp. We both managed a couple to hand and a few lost to the kelp. first fish on my yak just above legal caught on a reebs lure the second fish I caught was smaller and no pictures were taken. Snags and his 2 bass weather started to get nastier around mid morning so at 11 we paddled back in. We rounded the corner at the lighthouse and were greeted by the outgoing tide, white caps and a stiff breeze which made the paddle back to the launch a bitch but it was a good work out. |
