Mariner's basin, 12/29/15
I decided to target halibut in MB today. Bought a scoop of live bait which was mostly tiny anchovies and mini sardines except for one super jumbo sardine, a 5" pacific mackerel, and a 4" sardine. I didn't have any hooks big enough for the super jumbo but decided to give it a try anyway using a 1/0 octopus with a treble stinger. Within a minute of sending it down, line was peeling off the reel. I gave it some time, flipped it in gear, and started winding it in. The fish took two short but strong runs, and the came off. The bait had deep cuts and scratches on both sides. Big halibut, or something else? Any thoughts?
Caught a few short halibut and missed several other bites. Fishing was tough due to the wind which quickly moved me along whenever I stopped paddling, and to some very aggressive terns which dive bombed my baits the moment I finished hooking them. Between the wind and the terns, it was very tough to rebait. Eventually I CPRed a pretty nice spotty that I caught while trolling a crankbait back to my launch site. Anyone planning to fish LJ on NYE? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
