So I went out with my cousin Jay (JayB619) and his dad to La Jolla last Sat. Got to the launch around 6:30 and headed out. This was the first time I'd kayak fished La Jolla ( surfed and free dived before) and the first time launching my 2015 Revo from the surf. The water was really nice, calm and small swell and little wind - an easy launch. Headed out and took a little while to make bait, but once we found them it was easy to load up. Didn't really see much action, some boats and some birds and after a few passes in ~ 90 ft of water I got hit around 10 am.Thank goodness I just spooled my sealine with 65 lb braid as this guy wrapped around the kelp a few times. After a few good pulls I got him up and thankfully nailed the gaff right before a dog almost took him back to the water.
This was my first yellowtail ever! Haven't hooked up on any boat trips. Measured around ~34", but didn't get a weight. Not nearly as hefty as iethinker, but still a solid fish.
Much appreciation to all the kind folks on this site for helpful knowledge that led in the pursuit and catch of this beautiful fish. Tons of meat: sashimi, ceviche a beautiful collar and more.
