My Girl's Fish is Bigger Than Yours!

We got a prowler 15 for my girlfriend Linz about a year ago. Slowly we've been dialing it in for her... getting the transducer mounted just right, setting up the low-profile bait tank, making sure the layout is ergonomic. We've been out together several times, but haven't gotten into a good school of YT. She hooked into a big smoothhound shark once that towed her around a bit. But for our trip last week it all came together.

We were out at a decent hour, launching just after sun-up. Getting to the hump we saw tons of finbait popping on plankton. Easily tanked up on GB, while she was working the megabait in the cloud. She hooked a calico and some mega-macs for the tank. We didn't linger long, as we knew the action out on the corner was a bit better. Not many boats out. Once we got out to our target area, we started seeing the crab thick on the bottom. Big clouds of homogeneous bait balls gave way to tight thick and erratic blobs. The macs were tearing up the crab. Things are looking good...

She says to me, "It looked fishier back there a ways. Let's circle around deep." Always good to follow your instincts. We set up our spread in 130-140'. Well outside of where everyone was fishing on that day. We had a nice drift going, when the bait walled off and disappeared suddenly. Hold on to your britches...

Her bait gets rocked by something big. At first it didnt run or didnt realize it was hooked or something. Of course i'm thinking "oh that looks like a white!". But then he woke up. This thing was a beast. It had like 10 solid runs, and really smoked the TLD 15 spooled with 65# spec. It wouldn't come up off the bottom. Every time she'd pull hard the fish just powered right back down. Luckily, the Linz is a beast herself. She buttoned down the drag and fought that thing like a pro. As she was fighting it, I had it on my meter, when about 40-50 more YT swarmed around the hooked fish and lit up my screen. Woah big school! Fight was about 10 minutes, and when it came up I was shocked. I thought it was easily 30#+. Measured out to 42", and just shy of 30. But in her lap, this bulky seriola looked more like 35.

One of my best days in La Jolla for sure. The video footage came out so radical. Set for 720p HD, crank up your sub-woofer and enjoy!
