La Jolla 3-23-15
Hit La Jolla today. Once a week is all I have been able to do since having to go back to work last October. I miss the parts of 2014 when I could go there 2 or even 3 times a week. Even with less trips 2015 has been a good year so far. Got a late start as was in the water at 6:50am. The forecast had 2' to 3' swells on launch the waves where at least 3 feet and I took 3 right on the chest, one was strong enough to break one of the strap buckles on the front hatch. I thought not a good start. Making bait looked easy after spending 15 minutes to untangle the sabiki (f'nsabiki), I set the rod on the rod holder while turning on the bait tank motor, and there fish on the line. I pull it up and there are 3 macs that tangled up the sabiki (f'nsabiki). after a couple of minutes I realize there is no hope for untangling it, so I continue using it with 2 usable hooks. It is much slower catching bait. I finally make it out too 140'+ and I meet AQUAHUNTER, nice meeting you man. He already had 1 Yellow and I'm thinking man I should have made it out here earlier. I continue SW to deeper water while trolling a waxwing and a flyline greenback mac. For the next 3 1/2 hour I go all over the areas that have been productive. Sometimes I see great looking marks on the FF but no love from the fish. I start trying the Yo Yo Iron on the marks and finally get a hit and fight it for 15 minutes before it comes off. I try Yo Yoing a couple more times and was wondering why the line with the drop loop and 15' up from the bottom is being ignored when all of a sudden the reel starts screaming and after a 20 minute fight I see color and get to gaff it. Sweeeeeet! Tried all for a couple more hours, but no mas. When I get to the launch I got the yellow stashed inside the yak and all the tourist are asking the same old questions. Then the Fish and Game guys comes up and asks if if caught anything so I ask him if he can wait while I go get the car. When I get back he ask me all the normal questions and if he can measure and weight it I forget how many cm he said it was but I remember 22lb. Yessss a PB yellow on the kayak, just what I had hoped for earlier in the day. After he was finished taking all the numbers I asked him if he could take my picture with my camera. so here is the picture he took at the launch. All in all another great trip to La Jolla.
