Drop the notice in the circular file. They (dmv) is so screwed up, it will probably be years before they come after you. Then you just tell them you submitted all the paperwork in their time frame and they must have lost it like they do a lot of their stuff. Now I'm not a lawyer but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Motel once. the writer of this post accepts no liability as to the accuracy of statements made.
