LJ 06/03 Leggo My Leg-o Kayak Mako
After fishing the evening shift from the Shores on Saturday for just some
barricuda, I decided to try fishing the empty mid-day shift on Sunday. Here's the Hobie Adventure vehicle ready for launch at Big Rock with clearly .... treacherous launch conditions. Seriously there were some big set waves to 6'+ at Big Rock, and in the photo you can see the large lineup of surfers off shore at windansea, waiting thru another long lull. Once again as typical of this year, acres of bait boiling. Where it sounds like its hailing all around you. Nice marks on the meter. I caught a huge mackerel that had to be around 4 lbs. Besides almost getting spooled by a sea lion, it was pretty slow for me, greenback baits got mainly molested by toothy cuda and calicos. Not everyone is getting YT and WSB, in case it seems that way to some e-lurkers here. So I decided to head out deeper, 140', saw a bait ball on the meter and fired a bucktail/plastic which got inhaled upon landing. Pretty solid battle ....... to find that it was all toothy. The eyes give you that warm and fuzzy feeling. A cuddly lil' mako. And now a couple of shots that were a little risky to take, but I took a chance from two feet away and he *didn't* jump in the boat with me. I won't let my wife see this one. So after a failed attempt to grab and control him by the back of the neck, I had to cut the line and sacrifice my $6 bucktail!! Another adventure comes to an end.
