Wide open fishing in Newport!

Recent reports of giant YT and hungry WSB coming out of Newport! Have you heard? One guy got like 12 halibut in one day, all over 40 pounds!

Holy Cow!

George and I will be fishing Newport/ Corona Del Mar area on Sunday.

Launching from Coast Guard Beach at 6am.

We'll pound the sand for Halis, possibly try to deplete the Calico population or maybe even harvest a baby T.

Come join us.

Matt

You guys could have avoided all that soft sand to pull through and just went here.

Coast Guard

I have not launched from Coast Guard Beach since the remodel was done.

Did they build a little ramp/ sidewalk to avoid the sand?

I'm not. But, I can't afford the 100+ mile drive one way to La Jolla... and I'm getting tired of the paddle out from Mother's Beach around the point. I'd love to know where this is... I definately need to fish more local. Care to share?

PV, there are no easy ways to fish this area via kayak, so I do not worry about spilling any secrets. The fish you catch here will have been earned! Malaga Cove, quick paddle around to Rocky Point, free parking up above, no restrooms. Surf is usually small, sometimes .......not so small

My best day fishing in a long time. Didn't even bring any fish home.

Hooked up a couple short Halis, a few nice Calicos.

The best part was first thing in the morning, I get taken for a ride by a big ass T shark. I had 60 pound line on a 113. What a blast, he stayed low.

He finally decidedes to make a run straight at my kayak, I'm reeling my ass off....faster...faster....

The beast jumps out no more than 10 feet from my yak. Straight up in the air. My rapalla flies right at me, missed my head by a foot or so.

I got one glimpse of the creature, a conservative estimate of 4-5 foot body, 2 foot tail.

Made my day.

Can someone with experience describe how to subdue Mr.T? When I saw him out of the water I felt very unprepared.

No parking before 5am is another factor for Malaga.
