What Would You Do?

So we're fishing LJ this past weekend, it's between 3am and 4am and I hear a boat in the distance motoring towards the area that I'm fishing. As he gets closer and closer I start to ask myself if he see's my light which sits about three feet above my head or if he even see's my headlamp which was going dead but still had enough juice in it. Well, guess what? I totally f'ed up and waited for him to make the move..........wanting, wishing & hoping he had noticed me. What lasted maybe 2 minutes felt like it took place in a matter of seconds. As he got to within 100' he finally noticed me but I was already on the move. It scared the sh*t out of me and made me realize how important it is to be visible......I always thought I had enough light until this incident occurred.

I ran the whole thing to my head multiple times and kept asking myself what I did wrong. I finally realized that it wasn't about what I should have done as much as what I didn't do....become extremely visible at night. Going to do some shopping this week for better lighting.

Stop fishing in the dark, the WSB dont wake up until 4:00 am.

get a bright flash light and keep a spare handy.

I have this same attitude and I don't even fish at night. It's amazing how close some boats get before they change direction. I have my whistle ready to blow and often wave my paddle.

Try extra lights, light sticks, reflective tape big strobe lights.... Anything that would make you more visible at night and always assume the power boaters don't see you.

That's good advice... I use the same technique when I'm riding my motorcycle.

Yanni would throw his fillet knife right at the boat captain, fillet him and hang him upside down from a tree and pose for photos.
And later, post a great recipe on BWE.
Yanni is true grit!

X3 on that one. I always move way out of the way, even if it means leaving biting fish. I'm allergic to boats.

I carry a LED Maglight with me when I fish at night and adjust it's focus to spot. They are very bright. If a boat is coming towards me and seems to not be seeing my all around light up on it's four foot pole: I turn it on and shine it right at them, right at their eyes. You don't have to do it for long or twice for the same boat.

They can't miss it.

Once while hooping a local breakwall I had the Sheriff boat come right at me and shined the maglight in his eyes. He then came along side and said WTF what are you trying to do blind me? I said: "No, but honestly did you see me before I shined my light on you?" He said: "Well No.. I must of missed your all around do to our cabin lights" I said: "There you have it.. Sometimes even the best miss things. I just wanted you to know I was there." After that he was cool, and at times now he just comes by to say hello when I'm there. That to me says he's now always keeping an eye out for me and other yakkers out there. People don't know till they learn kind of thing.

I've run some big boats and you can miss stuff but you can't miss someone with a bright flash or spot shining it directly at you. That's why I always take a bright flashlight along with my yak lights.
