We use about 4 feet. We figure any more and you defeat the purpose of the spectre. We bring along extra leader line for cutoffs (usually by barries), frays and what not.

where did it break? at your mono to spectra connection? If so learn a better Knot and/or use a swivel... or You may be pulling too hard... that is, if it was even a fish you broke off.... more than likely you were stuck on kelp. Or use stronger mono... 40 lb min.
USE the spectra to cut the kelp: After hooking a fish it will take a good run and tie up in the kelp... if its an actual fish and gets wrapped up, there are a few ways to use the spectra to cut the kelp and free your trophy... once you are pretty sure you're stuck in the kelp put your reel into free spool and let the fish run again... the spectra will cut the kelp.... if it wraps up again... repeat. This will work most times... and you will know its a snag if it doesnt run anywhere if you throw it into free spool... if you don't feel any head shakes its a snag... break if off and move on.
