Jim has done alot for this sport, and in naming his tourney in honor of Mr. Moyer was, to me personally, worthy.

Before any panties get bunched up in a wad, I am not defending anyone.
The first Cali my boy caught was an 18 1/2 incher. Yes we kept it, with no fear of backlash. And in knowing Brad from the fishing grounds and his posts, he does spend alot of time on the water and has paid his dues. As with all of the regulars that spend time on the pond, calis are not what they chase after. It is the pictures of the elusives that they covet and target. To eat.
And these guys are like me, I do not buy fish from the stores, for the simple reason of how they are caught and the bycatch that is discarded.

This is just my opinion, and like arseholes, everybody has one.
I pesonally, as with my friends (boaters...arrrrgh!) prefer that our friends eat fresh fish than go to a store.

The way I see it, if I could get out 4 times a week, maybe more, it would increase my odds. Ergo, with the time on the water some of the regs are putting in, they are definitely getting skunked on the prizes more often than they are catching, as the only posts with pictures are when they are catching.

As far as Jim taking clients out and teaching them, that is his biz, and he does teach the conservative issue. Maybe we should say thank you instead of bashing, it could be worse, we could have an overabundance of clueless fishermen out there with no etiquette.

I’m a member of Kurt’s wishy-washy club when it comes to catch or release. Lamb I mostly keep. It’s good to eat and I enjoy taking care of my friends. I hope we can all agree it’s is no one’s business to judge if it’s cool to supply friends with fish. It would be like judging is it cool to have a lot of friends.

Calicos I used to kill and eat without forgiving. It may have been Jim’s preaching that made me realize it’s not that cool. Jim has thought a lot of people a lot of good things about our sport. I see one particularly talented client in "Winter Yellowtail" section on 12/6/03:

I think the least cool thing about Jim is that he's not playing WCW. His clients keep him busy, so we would even stand a chance to kick his butt. :lol: The whole BWE game would be more interesting. I now barely take calicos. I think 1 killed only 1 this year.

Brad is pretty much the same way… We know that. So this whole discussion is absurd. Looks like we’re bored and need to hit the water ASAP.

I never had any interest in being a sportsman. In some ways, I find the notion of hooking and potentially injuring fish just for pleasure, or "sport", less morally defensible than fishing for meat. Walking around the neighborhood trying to kick cats would be sport as well, but most would say somewhat cruel.

Matt, you can have some fish anytime. But you really should catch your own. :lol: I can give you some numbers or guide you if it will help.

Jim, I thru back 5 nice cali's tonight (like I usually do), because none of them spilt my beer (a captial offense on my boat) and I consider them bait stealing trash fish (except when the wife wants tacos). I don't report all the bonies, barries, calis, spanish, short lings, etc I throw back because, really, who cares.

I think Jim is right about one thing, and that is that people sometimes get the wrong idea about some of us that fish a lot. They think we score all the time and are up to our eyeballs in fillets. They don't notice when two weeks go by and we haven't reported a nice fish. I'm out there 3-5 days a week, every week, all year. I didn't catch a YT in Feb, Mar, April, or May despite putting in close to 400 hours on the water. I didn't catch a point fish from Jan 6th to April 7th. Weeks like last where I load up are the reward for those long stretches of futility. I am not surprised that people sometimes only see the successes, but I am surprised that one of the most experienced people made that mistake.

Personally, I am completely agnostic on C&R. Frankly, I don't consider it my business what anyone else does within the constraints of the law, and even then it's not my job to police or judge. I guess I come from a different culture where the polite response to someone's post would be "Nice fish, thanks for sharing" and any concerns would be dealt with personally. I guess I'm still adjusting to the fact that on this coast it seems every one must have an opinion on everything other people do, and must publicly share that opinion because they are so very important that, of course, everyone wants to know said opinion. I guess it's entertaining in a way. But I think I've got the shameless self promotion thing down. :? :lol:

Calling Jim's guided trips clusterfucks says alot about what you don't no. Jim teaches newbies to stay away from others trolling lines, not to cross in front or behind, stay away the from the sporties, and other edicate that helps not piss off pros like yourself :roll: . I don't no you ryan, but I'm sure your a stand up guy when your not jumping on the bandwagon to bash an individuals lively hood to feed his kids. Jim has guided a lot of guys we all no, Arne, Brad, Art, and many others who have become great kayak anglers. I'm not saying that he made the great fisherman, they were already that, I am saying that he teaches some great edicate for the sport. Jim's a smart ass, we all no it. Take him or leave him, he does great things for this sport.

I was not raised on the East Coast I am a west coaster and have spent my entire life in or around the water. I was taught to use and respect what it has to offer. Catch fish, keep fish eat fish, go do it again. Always with the idea of rarely freeze it, it is better fresh. No fish in the freezer means another excuse to go fishing. I was also taught about catch and release and fishing for sport. Which I really enjoy, I do keep fish but I am not what would be called a meat fisherman. I fish to be on the water and enjoy the sport of catching fish. Believe me I understand the killing of fish, how much shit did I take for killing a Marlin. I was just never taught or have bought into the feed the village mentality. Sure I also give fish to friends on occasion but it is certainly not what I go fishing for nor do I feel the need to do it or that it justifies killing more fish that I could go out and catch next time for my family. So now you know how I feel and Brad please accept my apology if you felt this was an attack on your character that was not the intent. Like I said you just kind of pushed my button.

Please let me know what it is that we are doing that is causing this clusterfuck for you. I am sure you have years of experience from which I can learn from.
Honestly dude, I try to teach people how to do this sport safely and with consideration of others on the water with a bit of ethic. How does this pain you? I certainly get clients that don't know up from down, think how they would be if they didn't take a class and headed out to fish next to you. :shock:

If you do decide to start the cat kicking competition let me know, I have one running around in my house that I am willing to donate to the cause.

Nice catch Brad. I hope to duplicate a tenth of your success tomorrow. I and a friend of mine will be in LJ with my kayak for the 1st time. Look forward to meeting some you guys. We will be in a green xfactor, and tye dyed extreme. More than likely running close together, since he's VERY green to ocean fishing.

P.S. We've spent two months fishing MB and SD harbour, so this a big day for us.

Interesting topic. I'm new to this sport, kayak fishing, but have been very successful. I attribute my success to this site, reading what all you experts do. Like the Mad Scientist, I to am a meat slayer, but that doesn't make me a non conservationist or a non sportsman, nothing I kill or take goes to waste, I obey the laws and regulations and I have many friends and family who are unable to fish, but still love to eat fresh fish and I supply it for them, they can't catch their own damm fish. I said I would never post on this site, just keep my thoughts to myself, but this last topic changed my mind. Generally, all of the regular posters seem to be good men and fine sportsmen, even you Mr. Mad Scientist. I’ve learned alot about this sport and I thank all of you. The Barbarian.
