My kinda drama

I actually like the action / adventure genre better, but whats life without a little drama?

18 trips to La Jolla this year and I haven't made it back since mid August.
I'm jonesing bad for a trip south, but you do what you can to get that yak fishing fix right?

So I hit the long drive to (5minutes) Cabrillo.

After fishing all day I had caught multiple sand bass, sculpin, and a thresher shark, all released while I continue to look for that elusive big butt.

Now for the DRAMA...
I am quite a few miles from the launch
and the wind is picking up, (it gets horrible here)
I talk myself into "just a couple more" drifts (ADHD is a good thing sometimes)

I go for one more pass in front of that kelp line...
I can only work one rod in this wind and swell
and it is on my lap, with the butt under my leg, while I paddle to stay outta the kelp but just to its edge...

then BAMM, thump-thump-thump
halibut time!
I grab the rod
and the drama starts...
You know that feeling, drop the paddle, or try and paddle with one arm and fish with the other... (Hobie guys, no comment please)
I am drifting fast into the thick salad
and this butt feels heavy
quick look behind me confirms it, I am gonna be deep the solid kelp very soon...
and I have a good chance of slamming that buoy on the way in

Just at the last second I see a skinny little stringer and reach out for it
almost reaching too far, wobble wobble, I just miss the buoy...

Success!, rod in one hand, kelp in the other
I quickly wrap the kelp around my leg, which immediately spins the yak side ways...
I am now right up against the forest
Feels like I have a good hook set, so I start reeling in faster than normal...
I see color... and it looks good... except that "Vertical" thing butts do sometimes...
She dives down deep, I know I won't get many chances at this fish so the next time she comes up I reach out far... again almost tooooo far and stick her...

At this point I could careless how smooth I look, so long as I get the game clip on her, and I don't end up bleeding

So I guess I do like a little drama in my life...
Just so long as there is a little action to go along with it

wcw submission to follow
now go get something Wade...or did you already?

hahaha, and you haven't missed much!!!

but if you don't get down here and fish SOON, you WILL !!!! although it looks like it would take a 35-40lb YT or a 45-50lb WSB to upgrade, you never know, it could happen.....

Very nice one! Looks humongous- what was the lenght/weight? Was it so big that it required 2 stringers?
