What about seals?

What is the law regarding seals....I know you cant harrass them, but I also heard you can use non-lethal force to keep one at bay....

Last week I had one that would not leave me alone...

What is the general rule of thumb so to speak...

Thanks

Uh, dont be a dickhead and use a sling shot on one is a general rule that comes to mind....

Or
quit feeding them, take out an iron, hell get bored real quick and move on, there are several other tactics that you can learn, none of which involve harming the seal.

ps

at least you were smart enough to delete your post....

If one is being bothered by a sealion "LEAVE THE AREA".. there are a few that will not tolerate a gun or slingshot in a public area. Any crap like that gets a call to 911 and DFG. If you are attacked thats another thing, you have a right to defend yourself.

remember it's their ocean we are just sitting on floating platforms using their home. They are frustrating but no one should be shooting them, smacking them with gaffs, or any other form of violence.

I like the old move on to another location idea.

Troll a rapala or something similar for 5 minutes.
Pray that a cattle boat shows up. They're seal magnets.

I'm with Tom. Find a skiff and do the 'hand off'.

As much as they piss me off. I reel in my bait and put it in my bait tank to keep the dogs from getting a free lunch. Some time they beat me on my fly lined mack. I understand it's a 50,000 fine for hurting a marine mammal. I love the PB handoff. I'll use that one next time.

l am pretty sure you can use force against them, but you can't use enough force to break the skin or cause permanent injury. But, as has been stated, the best idea is to keep your bait out of the water long enough that they move on.

It is not their ocean, they just use it like the rest of us.

Point of order:
Sealions are the offenders.

Don't slander seals.

I went spear fishing today and got a real nice sized male sheephead-- got it the surface and off the spear, put it on my stringer, got back in the yak, and felt a bump... looked down and a saw a lil seal with my fish in his mouth.

I laughed it off-- not like my life depended on it. Glad he enjoyed it.

Keep it in perspective-- it's their home-- and the hunt is what it's all about (at least for me). Please dont hurt a seal-- that's not cool.

Fling an Iron in their general direction. Don't try to hit them, irons aren't cheap. They are smart animals, they get the point.

Youll have to do more searching, but I know youre actually allowed to harrass some of the seals, but not all of them. Some are endangered or more rare and can not be harmed in anyway. But some are local and youre allowed to try your luck at runnin em off.

I would just stick with whats been said though for all of em anyways.

Exactly. I just toss iron or a four ounce sinker in their general direction and they move on pretty quickly. No need to hit them though the idea is to scare them not injure them.

You are actually allowed to harass them a bit but you arent allowed to do anything that causes an actual injury. no stabbing or shooting with a gun but you can hit them and use paintball guns on em. Kayak paddles work well my friend smacked one in the face with a kayak paddle

Thanks to all the good work sea world, LJFOS and other agencies do, you can expect to have alot more encounters like this;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfYB6kuUQL0

the sea-lion was not being baited or teased, he simply wanted ON the yak and actually slid up over the bow one time off camera...not sure if he was sick or if the tax man was around or what...he was biting the rod butt, more playful than agressive butt where do you draw the line??...I'm sure someone less comfortable in the water and around seals would have felt VERY threatened? Glad it wasn't ol'knothead.

Leaving the "area" eventually did the trick....
