Either way I win!!!!!!!!
definition: the first loser even though I was technically "the first loser" with my second place...I still won... how may you ask? this was my very FIRST yellow from La Jolla... and there were alot of hours on the water to get this YT.... this was my eleventh trip...and most of the trips were not your typical launch at 5am off at 10am... we're talkin' the launch at 5am off the water at 6pm kinda ass kickin' days... there was even one day last month, whilst yo-yoing, I had the yellows, litterally, 360 degrees around me, frothing all around, and what did I do.... y'all er gonna love this I set the yoyo rod in the holder, to grab the surface jig stick, with adrenaline ripping and heart rate at 110mph, I turned round to grab the jig stick, only to find the line all wadded up...(still not sure how, but I must have, at some point, hit the lever to put the reel in free spool with my elbow or something, and the reel was sitting in the rod holder all wadded up up) I screamed like little girl... WTF? now, I'm in a frenzied panic, trying to get the gigantic birdnest undone, heart rate is now up to 200mph, while the fish are goin' off all around me, I'm losin' it... OH F#$%, Sh*t , OH MY God, C'mon idiot...boy was I bummed... the fish were so close, I could done a friggin' flip cast 20 feet away and got one...dumbass...talk about panic...the worst part was...(in retrospect) I had a yoyo iron 60-70 feet down in the water still that I coulda (shoulda) just started to reel in, since the meter was lit up also... and not only that...but I had another friggin' yoyo set up in the rod holder...hell I coulda just thrown that at 'em... why didn't I throw that? what a knucklehead...severe knucklheaditus!!! well...I blew it...no excuses...I blew it... lesson learned: take a second to focus, evaluate, and adapt.... That WILL NEVER...EVER happen...again!!!!EVER!!! so...there you have it....the agony of defeat... and now...the thrill of victory... so you see...I AM the winner!!! it was one on one...me against the fish... and I won this time...22 lbs of glory.... Finally... after several trips to La Jolla... and comming up empty handed... 22lbs 1oz...not a monster...but... my first LJ YT...and in a Baytubers tourney...how cool is that? major league stoke!!!!!!! gonna have to get a bigger ice chest oh...and...It defintely shortens the learning curve to hang out with this guy... if your gonna try to play the piano...take a lesson.... THE DARKHORSE...prefishing Saturday... Congrats to Patrick, too... and of course, congrats to to doardo50 Dave for the actual tourney win....after all...he did...get the cash$$$ Last edited by yakrider; 02-16-2009 at 03:23 PM. |

I know where you're coming from Josh and know the feeling....congrats! It took me a dozen or so times to get my first decent fish (big butt, wsb or yt) out of LJ, it was a wsb. What a relief that was!
I still blame Matt Moyer for taking me out my first time out of LJ in the craziest meanest conditions! I thought that was how LJ always was and didn't understand why they called it the "pond" until after a few trips down there. It took me forever to clean myself of all that bad luck that Matty gave me that morning.....remember that morning Matt?.....and you wonder why I made you a "gulp" omelette!!!! |

WTG Josh, nice first LJ yellow. Liked your story, I can relate to the time I started kayak fishing. Had a yellow on and the rod butt was in my belt area and it set off my co2 life vest and all of a sudden a big yellow baloon was in my face. Pretty comical. I see that darkhorse karma has worn off on you too..........

Congratulations!
And after all the work and the final reward, what do you get? Yellowtail fever! Constantly thinking and planning how your gonna score your SECOND big fish. Your fishing buddies invite you to join them in SD bay: "No thanks guys, I'm goin for Yellowtail!" Get together in Dana Point? "Sorry, I'd rather fish La Jolla. You see, now I'm a big game expert!" I still feel the pull in my arms and back and I want to feel it again. Maybe I should retire from my job and become a full time guide! Yellowtail fever - it happened to me. Don't let it happen to you! Oh, what the heck, GO FOR IT!
Congratulations |

Super congrats! I lost what was to be my first yak yellow during that last squid bite so I feel your vindication. I've been doing this a WHILE though, so I will be one jubilant mofo! (It's kinda turned in to a lifetime goal).

way to go Josh!
It sure was a pleasure to return the photo biotch favor, on tournament day no less. Pre-fishing for the tournament was fun, and you made me proud yesterday. You had a good read on conditions and made a couple of excellent choices, you earned that fish.
