Ray Boots

I stepped on a stingray at LJ. I usually shuffle but had to hop out in the middle of the launch once because my seat clips snapped and then again when my pedal pod popped out. 3rd time hitting the water wasnt shuffling as I was holding the yak against waves and stepped on one.

Anyone have some info on footwear that might protect against a future hit? Looks like Vibram has some urchin proof shoes but nothing about stingrays.

For you Vibe owners lessons learned was to always bungie my seat incase there is a seat clip mishap and check the screws on the clamps for my pedal pod.

Hot water for a couple hours seemed to do the trick. It was my first time being stung and it was early in the morning before lifeguards were at the main station so I actually went to the Scripps ER. Didnt feel like just trusting webmd for the first one.

The ER Doctor had been stung twice and went to a lecture on this stuff during his residency. He said 1/20 stings turns into a serious infection. So with a 5% chance of that, just start with hot water and keeping the wound clean. Even if a piece of the stinger broke off inside, it’s organic material and will dissolve. The risks with antibiotics like Cipro aren’t worth the low infection rate.

Even if there isn’t a boot out there that works for a surf launch and all day pedal, I’ll still go out. Just make sure to shuffle on the launch and try to ride all the way in on the landing. LJ is just too nice of a spot to pass up fishing.

The most ironic part of all this is its my first trip since landing a 38.6# YT....I guess Poseidon strikes back!

Here's what I've been using for more then 2 years. On my second pair now. Used them on my 2016 Hobie Revo 13 and now on my Solo Skiff. Super cheap and a hard sole protects your feet and much easier to walk with then most water shoes. https://www.ebay.com/itm/164250946330

Thanks! I went on their site and they have stopped selling to catch up on orders...worth a shot once they’re back in stock. Now back to our regularly scheduled program at LJ...the shuffle.

I wear shoes

Old running shoes dry fast and aren't uncomfortable when peddling. they also drain well when soaked.

I know the feeling. Stepped on my fair share while surfing. Never had any issues outside the initial pain. But my dad had a bad one surfing in Huntington. Dr. didn't get all of the barb out. Ended up going septic. Needed crazy meds and an ER visit with an insane fever. Those things are no joke! Glad you're all good. The stingray-proof booties are a great idea!
