OG Kayak Setup for La Jolla

Hey Guys. In this video, we are going back to the OLD SCHOOL. This is how the OGs of la jolla first started fishing it from plastic vessels and surfboards. In those days you had the OK Scupper pro which was the top of the LJ kayak food chain, until the OK Prowler came along. I'd love to learn more about this history if anyone would like to share their stories from back in the day.

To you beginners on this site, you don't need thousands of dollars of gear to target these trophy fish in SoCal. Many of the OGs on this site started fishing for YT and WSB with a setup very similar to this. All in all I'd say the total cost of a rig like this would be around 1000-1500$ including EVERYTHING. These days you seen plenty of guys out there with one rod/reel combo worth that much.

I had a busted rudder cable on my PA and she was at fastlane for repair. A good buddy of mine Paul Elder let me borrow his P15 for a quick paddle around la jolla. I decided to do a video about these OG style kayak fishing techniques.

The salty dogs of SoCal all have their regional secrets and tactics. Most of them have little need for this info. But the SALTIEST of dogs can confirm, an OK P15 and a couple poles are all you really need to get in the game, and maybe even win it!

Great video as usual Chris!

You don't need a Hobie to catch fish.
You don't need a Talica to catch fish.
You don't need Ulua to catch fish.

Its just about getting out and time on the water.

Great reminder from Chris. As the lawyers and logicians might put it: "Fancy gear may be sufficient, but it isn't necessary!"

My first setup was a 1990s OK Malibu 2 with two rod holders. No FF. Fishing by guesswork. Chris was there when I caught my first ever YT on it using a ~$100 lever drag setup with a wobbly handle. That boat is still in my garage for when friends and family want to join me for a fish!

X2........Just don't buy a sit in Walmart kayak, if you are going to go in the surf.

My first kayak was a grey SPTW. Turns out it was Jim Sammons' original marlin kayak.

Next one was a blue Prowler 15. Turned out that one was Rhino's from his dvd's on catching threshers.

Kayaks had a legendary pedigree.

My use, not so much.

Great video. Really brings me back to when I first started on a prowler 15 setup just like that no finder and everything. Eventually upgraded to a 5 gallon bucket bait tank.
