5/17/2020 - Dana Point

Almost didn't go out today because the wind looked like it was going to be a problem, but glad I did. In the end the wind was very manageable and always makes me glad I can peddle rather than paddle.

First drop was right outside the harbor, first cast of the deal. It yielded my biggest bass to date on the kayak. I didn't think fish like that were this close to shore as it looked more like a bass you catch off the islands. Could also be my bad luck at actually catching fish!

Caught another 8 calicos/sand bass at the rock by about 10 am and it started to get really crowded with lots of Kayakers out there, probably saw some of you guys. Plan was to make bait and try and recreate the other guys white seabass but the only bait I could make was one smelt. Hope others fared better.

I've been launching at the ramp (price is up to $15 now though...). Not sure if baby beach is open but I surfed Strands and Salt Creek the past couple days and both of those parking lots have finally reopened. I thinks it's safe to assume other DP beach lots have opened back up as well. Worst case scenario you only have to back track to the ramp and pay the $15!

That sucks. $15 for parking, $20 for bait. That equals about $35 per lb of fish if you catch a keeper. Guess I'll be peddling out from Baby's and spending a little time up front to catch a few on the sabiki. Eh, its half the fun anyway I guess.
