Tie down methods for crates/coolers - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

Recently picked up a Engel 19qt Drybox/Cooler for my Outback. I was considering picking up their salt-rated tiedown kit they offer.

Never drilled any holes in my outback before. Any tips or things to look out for? should I forgo screws all together and go with clips like the HCrate?

Any input much appreciated!

I would avoid drilling holes into the well. Incase something unforeseeable happens and it ends up leaking. I would secure to the gunnels if possible. I’ve had good luck using the hobie bait tank straps and pad eyes. Use small screws 10-32 stainless with washers and nylock nuts on the inside.

The hobie bait tank straps. Figure a way to attach these straps to your crate and you will be golden. Some stainless steel screws and nuts should do the trick? You should be able to find this at your local marine supply. Give Andy a call to order kit. It comes with two straps that have quick release buckles. If you add 4 straps, one on each corner of your crate, it won’t be moving. Do a search for hobie bait tank straps and you can see kit. I used them on my vitals tank and it’s solid. Good luck.

extra large pad eyes that came out around 2017. this is useful if you are attaching multiple pieces of equipment to the same pad eye. With the suggested straps, mounting should be a breeze.

I installed several of these nylon eyelets on all my kayaks, place them in different areas for tying down everything including rod leashes or crates, etc. I install them on the top of the rail or inner side just below the top of the rail if you want to keep the top of the kayak side rail clear for loading onto car/truck racks. They can be installed using stainless screws, washers and nuts. If access to install the inside washers and nuts is a problem then use Aluminum pop rivets, these from OEX will spread out in three directions on the inside without needing access inside the hull or using washers. The pop rivets are considerably less expensive than stainless steel hardware. I am including links to these parts on OEX online order site. All you need is a 1/8" drill and a pop rivet hand gun, they install super fast and won't corrode. Seems like a good option. As well as removable and versatile.

Might also keep me from drilling into my cooler although not a concern.
