10/16 Dana Point

Meet up with my buddy Omar @ Dana Point boat ramp 5am
Set up our yaks got on the water by 530am
Had our own bait (squid and shrimp) but decided to grab
bait from Bait barge.
We Headed North .Looking for a kelp forest.
I started trolling the hammer swim bait . and get slammed, a nice 12'' calico at the end of the line.
Got the the kelp forest and start fishing the dropped loop .
Right away BAM start getting hit on the shrimp. Kept it going for the next 45 min.
Nothing but sheep head. , Just what I came for !
Kept 2 legals from that area.
Peddles around looking for more life. Found a few more fish but no keepers .
Had a great day in the water . It was a calm day till the usual nooner blow .
fish count:
5 Sheep head (2 legal)
1 sargo (about 1.5-2lbr)
1 kelp fish
1 sand bass
3 calicos
10+ macs

Great report!
This has me inspired to check out Dana again soon.

Last time I went out, I paddled 1/2 a mile up past the red buoy... I think the kelp was laying down, as I didn't see a single frond. When it's up, is the kelp usually in that area along the breakwall, or do you have to go further north?

We did not fish by the break wall
we peddled north toward the point right before the Ritz hotel.
