If you hover the cursor over the ship symbols it says some of them are reported now or within minutes and some of them several hours ago. It would be just my luck to be run over by a freighter reported several hours ago - that appears to be 40+ miles away...
Not real time enough for me... |

This runs off AIS. Most small boats don't run AIS and they are the ones that are most likely to run you over. Don't let this lull you into a false sense of security, keep your wits about you in the fog and don't go out if you're uncertain.

Listen Up
When the fog rolls in, the only thing I trust is my ears. Even a sailboat makes noise slipping through the water. Stay alert and listen carefully, you can hear the direction, and if you hear a doppler shift you know they are past you. It still gets hairy when it sound like they are headed right for you until the last minute, then they pass and you never saw a thing.
