One more fish and you have a decent trio of fish to submit and its only the first week of the year. How were the condiditons? The ocean looked beautiful in North County with a mild offshore.

Congrats...

Perfect corner shot, that guy wasn't goin nowhere. NICE. Was there a time of the day when the bite happened? I'm relegated to the midday slot for a few weeks...

Changed my mind, blowing off hoopin tonight to rest up for tomorrow AM. Guess I'll just have to dump that bait that's been thawed for a week. Should set up one nice stinky slick tomorrow morning.

I'm guessing it was an early bite, though the sun looks strong in the pic.

Why do I feel an "F&%$ing Arne" coming on?

Pretty much 1 footers at the launch with some 2 footers in the mix. Offshore breeze layed down to greasy calm. I could not resist the bird pile calling me....way out. On my way there a nice spot of very big fish came up. Down before I could get to them, they came up again and again. Kurt made his way out and had said he saw similar rolling monsters. Sure enough they come up again and we sprint only to have them go down again...and again. The spots of fish were from right along the kelp to around 140 feet, from about 3/4 and out to the corner. The only one that boiled close was 10 yards right behind me. The fish that came up along the kelp had the greenbacks coming out of the water. Serious heart pounding stuff as the fish looked REALLY BIG. Kurt and I were waiting for the next spot to go and I was yoyoing in 130 feet. About halfway up I got hit and boated what had to be the runt of the litter at 18 pounds 10 oz on Arne's digital. All the fish that I saw were up between 8 and 9:30, with my fish at 9:30, long paddle with some strong current had us on the beach around 11. If you are going, you are going to have to decide to go long for the fish I saw or hang at the old spot. Wait to make that decision after Arne posts

The inside "spot" was pretty dead most of the morning, though the occassional sand bass would inhale my bottom rig. Talked with Kurt for a while, but I soon bored him into leaving for more a more interesting conversation with Andy (and much more action).

I was throwing a sardine megabait for a long while with nothing to show, so I switched over to the trusty blue-white with rusty hooks. I was metering a big bait ball in about 100 feet and threw at it once for nothing. The drift was pretty quick to the SW so I paddled back to the bait ball - which looked like it had scattered along the bottom ... not the big ball like before.

I threw at it again and let the BW sink - just before it hit bottom it got slammed. The fish started towing me in circles and I felt a few tail thumps so I was thinking YT, but it never made a horizontal run ... so I started thinking BSB. The fish was sulking down there spinning me in circles for a few minutes before I started to get some line. Then more line ... and more line and a few minor runs.

I like to reel in from the right side of the yak for my gaff shots, but my line and the fish were down underneath the yak to my left, so with the dirty water I couldn't see any color. Then the fish just gave up and a minute later out from underneath my uninitiated P13 popped a big fish head: 8)

The fish weighed in at 42# 6 oz.

I had to complete my 2005 New Year's resolution, thus the change in name. Short for fishin' The other choices were unaccaptable to the family, Brad ... and Andy.

Fishing for LJ sand bass is still a lot of fun. I never saw the birds Andy was talking about and there was absolutely no surface activity on the inside. If I were you, I'd go for the longer paddle, 'cuz I was just lucky ... and eating well tonight with a big smile.

Good luck out there!

Fn'Arne does not even come close to doing it justice.

NICE!

A collective LJ slam before the end of the first week...unreal. Guess I better get out there and look for the other two fish I need this month before you two f&%*#rs run away with it. Otherwise I'll have to drive all the way down to Baja and try to ho myself on a tuna boat while they are still on the big boys, just to keep up.

Sounds like the bite is moving with the swing low tide. See you all tomorrow. And the next day, and the next day after that.

F$#&ing Arne! 8)

Nice catching Iceman and Arne. Already we are envious  .
60+ points each and the 1st week of the year isn't passed.
Now it's time for us to finally sign up for the WCW jackpot. Hopefully, we can make it out next week and gain a few points on you top-dogs .

Great day on the water even if I only got to be photo bitch. The YT were teasing me, popping up close enough too see the boils but far enough away so as to get there about 20 seconds too late. I was just paddling up too Andy getting ready to drop the iron when he gets bendo. These fish wouldn't stick in one spot and no love for me.

Turns out I should have stopped chasing bird schools around and stuck with Arne. He had a much better fish to be envious of.

One week in and these guys have as many points as I had last year! Good job, guys. I feel a little bad that I hoped they would wipe out when landing.

Arne informed me today that he has decided to retire from the WCW at the peak of his greatness, he is not entering this year. I totally understand, as I had told my wife that if I won I would sit this year out and just work on promoting it.

Arne, ya know some of us will be keeping track of your cumulative points anyway

I had LJ all to myself when you guys left. Lots of bait, and bird action. I hooked up, but it got wrapped and broke off... I was kinda lazy, and didn't want to paddle out to the corner to see what the birds were over... but when I eventually made it out I saw some big boils. Chucked the iron, but no takers. I hung around and waited for them to come up, and sure enough they did. Threw again, and ratted my jig stick... DAMN! The only fish I brought up was a sandy... and monsta macs. Congrats on the fish, guys.. Thanks for the heads up, Andy... I was wondering if anyone was fishing the corner...
I launched at 1130, so there was a light breeze. For the most part, it was pretty calm out there. But the big swells were still rolling through.. at times a 10ft swell would roll beneath me. Off the water at 430pm...
Here's on the water...

and here is the launch... for those who were wondering.

Good luck,
Dennis

I thought it was a lousy idea when you said you'd retire, Andy, and I still think it sucks for Arne, but I guess he has his reasons. Still, I know I for one wanted a shot at the champ in his prime.

Does this mean he doesn't get the banana peel treatment anymore?

Arne, is this a one year break to give us mere mortals a shot or a permanent deal? 2007?

Or perhaps he just wanted to save the $30 to use in a raffle (better prizes after all  )
