There are a couple of spots near Sunset Cliffs. Bermuda Ave. and Cable St. I think. You have to carry you yak down to the launch and deal with the surf.
I always launched from SI and paddled around Pt. Loma. It's a long paddle, but easier launch and better parking.

thanks, i was at the cliffs on saturday and saw some open beach but the waves were a little big for my liking and like you said the parking isn't the best.

Orchard/Cable can be a good one, but there is a lot of structure just below the surface that really mixes things up.
Just south of the OB pier is usually not doable. I launched there once and ended up landing at Orchard because of the swell. Bermuda can be a peice of cake, but it can also be impossible. It just depends on the tide and swell. It's also a pain to get down to the water with a kayak because of the narrow stairway. Check them out, and bring your kayak with you incase you find a spot that looks doable. Good luck. |

I've asked about that, but I don't think it's feasible with a kayak. Obviously, a lot of surfers find their ways down there, but from what I've been told, it's not possible to get a kayak to the water. I should check it out first hand to see what's going on.
I've spent some time looking for launch spots along the point. The few spots I've come across offer no protection from the swell and are therefore unreliable. If you can carry everything including your kayak over unsteady ground, then you are more likely to find a decent spot. For example, you might be able to launch from the cliffs (around Osprey St, I think) that go down to the water's edge. I've seen someone do it, but he was just going for a paddle (no extra gear) and didn't mind jumping into the water to launch and land. |

I live in OB and the point loma kelp has been my main fishing spot for a while now. As it's been said the cliffs are very unreliable and wide open to the surf. I don't mind getting a little wet on the way out but the real problem is how much the surf changes with the tide. Some times your waiting on high tide to get back in.
1, Cable/Orchard is good if your solo because of the ramp but it has the biggest most steady break. 2 Bermuda st beach is great if you have someone to help carry your yak down the steps. 3 The rock outcropping next to the bird shit rock (no surf) is easy if it's supper flat. Again you need someone to help you carry your yak to the water. PM if you ever want to launch together...I'm always looking for someone to help me with my yak too. |

How about parking and launching from Mission Point or Mariner's Point ?
http://www.sandiego.gov/park-and-rec...cilities.shtml There is always plenty of available parking, and the launch is very easy. Mariner's Basin Launch http://www.kayakfishnation.com/launc...inersbasin.htm |
