Would an Outback like this with the longer sailing rudder be problematic in the kelp? I own a Malibu X-Factor and am looking for a peddle system.
How does owning an Outback hurt in the thick of the kelp? Last edited by Dfender33; 07-30-2015 at 06:03 AM. |

If you lift it up, it's as if it wasn't there. If you put it down you can kind of anchor yourself in.

You'll get hung up if you try and peddle through thick patches. You can time crossing floating stringers by keeping the peddle flap against the kayay. Then down when your clear to peddle and you can float over small patches of kelp. If ever in the thick kelp pull the peddles and use the paddle. Glide over kelp like your malibu.
Big fan of the peddle over the paddle. |

If you do get kelp on the drive you can almost always short stroke the peddle for a little bit and it will work itself free. Pretty simple to clear the kelp. But as the others have said if it gets bad you can always just lift the mirage drive and the kelp will slide right off. Then you can replace the drive. It might sound tedious but it only takes about 5-10 seconds to do. I think I've only had to pull the drive twice. The rest of the time I just short stroke my way out of it.
