La Jolla 3-22-15

Launched at shores around 6:45am and fished the kelp for calicos, without any luck started targeting more structure and after a pretty slow morning of fishing with nothing but some bites my warbait swimjig got slammed by a legal cabezon, first time catching a cabezon and an overall fun day out on the water with my two friends!

Knifed a hog cab a few months ago and didn't get as much meat off him as I thought I would. How did you fair?

captnblood34 Yeah it was a pretty boney fish but I actually got quite a good amount for it being so boney. How do you usually cook it? My first time catching a cabby, I've cooked sculpin pretty good which seems to be similar.

Luck? Seems I'm low on it.. Lost more fish than the next 10 guys combined... Lost 2 really good ones but did manage a personal best calico at 5.2 pounds.

Hey guys... not to be a party pooper - I found this by accident trying to find the legal length for a Cabezon...

DFG site says Cabezon fishery is closed until April 1 for all boat-based anglers. Does that include us? I'm guessing not, since you were talking with DFG/DFW on the beach.

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/mapregs4.asp#cabezon

Keeper length is 15" for all you Cabezon lurkers out there.

You're looking at the central management area and he caught the fish in the southern management area, he's good to go or the DFG would have ticketed him. http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/mapregs5.asp
