Start out in the Harbors. Join other folks, and learn from them. A friend and I are heading out to Los Alamitos Bay on Sunday at 6am send me a PM if you want to join.
Things to get you started Life Vest Radio helps but not necessary Zman Paddlerz 3" and 5" Big Hammer Anchovy,Sex Smelt, Calico Hunter 1/4, 1/2, 3/8 lead heads Warbait skirted jigs Almost any bass fishing setup should get you started. And most important .... READ THE FORUMS for knowledge! There is tons of information here. --John |

1. PFD reachable and readily accessible in case you flip.
2. Gears thoughts should be multi-useful to keep your gears as light as possible. (tackle whore you know what I mean) 3. bungees bungees, you'll flip one day or another and its good to strap your gear if not, consider it a donation to the ocean. 4. Practice and spend time on the water, get familiar with your kayak, hop on or off the kayak. |

I would say that besides the PDF a good cooler that doesn't take up too much deck space but hold a lot of beer, is the other important life preserver. Just saying!

Whatever you do dont buy a $2000 motor for a $800 dollar kayak....also don't buy a $2000 motor for a kayak that has an $800 dollar sail on it....
Unless you are an F'n idiot!

Being an x-factor owner I would firstly get your bait tank set up dialed in. Depends on year / model but I reccommend the milk crate set up, it's worked great for me. Basically a bilge pump you submerse over the side, suck water up and put holes in the side of the bucket so the scupper holes behind you are your drain. I wish I had the newer model where the rear storage was flush and the lid opened up better. You'll know what I mean once you look at your behind the seat hatch. After that get some garage door sealer / plastic tubing and marine goop and add a secondary seal to the front gator hatch. It's a beast to paddle but does amazing in entry and exit from the water. I think of mine as an aircraft carrier.

Also get a bilge pump, I know this one guy who is on like his 8th kayak.
Also, it's a good idea to buy a 1600 motor if your on a 600 dollar kayak with an 800 sail if you have a beautiful women at home and it's not a good idea if your still living with your mother.
