Were other people hooping in the area? Happened to a friend of mine, dropped his nets, circled around and someone had come along behind him and scooped his nets up and kept going.

How long was your rope? What kind of floats were you using? If your floats were the little tiny egg shaped floats instead of the larger commercial style they may have sank out. If somebody picked them up, likely it was harbor patrol or lifeguard boat...if they pose a navigational hazzard and nobodys around they will pick them up and take them.

about 50' rope and commercial float, depth was about 27'-30' on the sonar. i called harbor patrol and they told me they don't do anything with them and that i would have to file a police report |

Damn, that's a bitch. There goes one of my plans for newport. Not going there! Next time I'm in Newport I'll keep an eye out.

Tide was dropping at that time, too. So there goes one theory.

I've had a lot of nets get donated on out going tide until I figured out what was up. The tide will carry them out no problem in the jetty if you don't weigh them down. Especially if there is a decent current. Also if you don't use big floats the current will suck the floats under. Plus with all the lobster boats out right now they're tearing up the kelp allowing a lot of trash into the bay. You may not see it on top, but it's definitely on the bottom. Nice piece of kelp with out going tide will help drag the nets off too.

I wondered where all the salad was coming from. Perfect conditions opening night and been a forest in my favorite spot ever since. So the commericial boats are responsible for all the kelp in the bay? |

The current and tide are really gnarly in that spot. Could've gotten sucked down, or drifted out. It's about 50ft deep on average at the end of the jetty. So if they drifted out, your 50ft of rope might not have been enough.

You are lucky you didn't lose them all. Could be the tide but I highly doubt it.
I got $50 that says Harbor Patrol picked up your nets. FWIW- hoop the OUTSIDE of the jetty. Last edited by cabojohn; 10-06-2014 at 11:33 AM. |
