Dana Point thresher video 8/10/14

8/10/14

Big thresher while targeting halibut

Fishing with Mike Scales

Bait was in the water no more than 4 minutes before it bit

Lots of activity out there right now

Set up it bit on: daiwa luna 300/californian rod 10-20lb

Why do the big fish I catch always hit on the smallest rod I have with me?

Nice, I've only fished from the jetty there, not from the kayak yet. Do you get bait from the barge there? Do you know what they have for bait right now?

As long as the baits are bigger than pinhead Choves I'll get it there. $10 kayak scoop but I tip and they hook me up. Bait at receivers change daily and can even change during the day so check out this phone number,

(619) 696-6673

Automated recording for bait at mission and Diego bay as well as dana point.

You can also request to follow Everyingham Baitco on Facebook and they post up reports almost everyday.

Noob here, why did you cut that fish off, at least without getting a really good look at it or some good pixs?

Great effort.
How did the Luna hold up! I have an extra Luna 250 (from my bass gear) I was going to use on my medium heavy inshore rod (25# PP) but wasn't sure about how hot the drags would get!
Your insight would be appreciated.

FFY

I have upgraded to carbontex drags in this reel. The drag is very strong and very smooth. If it was on a heavier rod I would have had no problem getting the fish up.

We got a good look at it in the beginning. Then it went straight down after about 15 minutes and sat at the bottom in 80 feet of water. Couldn't move it an inch after that happened. I could see it on my FF when I would try to lift, and it wasn't moving.

If I hooked up something that large and already spent that much time fighting it, I probably would have kept some pressure on the line and waited it out.

Thanks for sharing!

That was a fun day. The tail alone was as long as our kayaks! Beast of a fish! The thing didn't show one sign of fatigue. Glad we cut it lose, probably would've slapt my face clean off with his tail.
