Cabrillo beach June 8

Hello all,

New to the forum but have been kayak fishing for over 3 years now exclusively in lakes in and around Reno/ NorCal area. I'm a LA native (ELA to be exact) and have buddies still down in SoCal that I've infected with the kayak bug.

We are planning a trip to Cabrillo beach this June 9 and looking for any and all input, tip, tricks, ideas, warning etc.

Like everything I do, I've been researching everything the internet has to offer on the topic of fishing Cabrillo beach. I've come to understand it can get dicey out there with wind and chop.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to all those that reply.

Save it for a weekend and I'm sure you'll find a few of us there.

I lived in Boyle Heights for a few years, Aliso Village to be exact. Where in ELA did you live?

Nothing against Cabrillo, but if you're planning a trip from NorCal why not go to LaJolla where most of the big fish reports come from? I mean if you're going that far already, what's a couple more hours driving going to hurt?

I'm fairly new to kayaking. Would like to visit La Jolla at some point. When you guys go, do you guys camp or get a room? I don't feel safe leaving my yak outside while I sleep inside. One of my buddies got two ATV quads stolen along with his trailer while he slept up in pismo.

Jorloivl--- I thought June 8 was a weekend, Sunday I thought. Boyle heights? Damn, I thought my neighborhood was bad. I grew up by big eastmont school. Garhart and Beverly area. I always joked it was the good part of east LA.

Alana-- the reason I'm heading down is to visit friends and family. Kind of squeezing in the trip to begin with. My two other buddies live in montebello and long beach so Cabrillo is an easy spot to hit. We are definitely planning another trip on a mothership to San Clemente. But that's later.

I fished there last Sunday and saw 4 other kayak fisherman out there. One guy said it was slow, and he caught one short calico. I stayed out there after everyone left and I just had one rockfish I caught on a p line squid rig with squid strip. The fish nailed it as soon as I dropped it so I thought it was gonna be poppin, but that's all I got all day.

Not to discourage you, bc I've fished over there with a few friends on a little bay liner and we caught about 20 fish in a few hours on frozen squid (sculpin, cabezon, rockfish, calico bass and more).

Thanks for the info Silbaugh4liberty.

Someone logistic/situational questions--
* where's the best place to put in? Park?
*is the bait barge easily accessible or should we bring our own?
*any need for VHF radio?
*do winds pick up at a certain time historically or are they unpredictable?
Is boating traffic a major issue?
*insert any relevant noob question here....

Thanks again for any and all input.

anyluck last weekend?

I am looking to go out Cabrillo Beach for the first time. Never taken the yak out the ocean and wanted to know where to fish at Cabrillo.

Would it be inside the jetties or outside? Looking to go cod fishing and maybe some bass.

I am going to hit up the Bait Barge. how can i contact them?

A: Launch at the boat ramp. Make sure not to park in the trailer parking! You will get a ticket! There are single vehicle spaces there make sure that you park in those. Get there early because it can fill up fast.

*is the bait barge easily accessible or should we bring our own?
A: Yes, it is easily accessible. You can bring squid or whatever you want. If you are good enough to make your own bait...that is the way to go. Otherwise buy bait at the receiver for $10.

*any need for VHF radio?
A: Not necessary, but nice to have in case of emergencies, and to communicate with friends.

*do winds pick up at a certain time historically or are they unpredictable?
Is boating traffic a major issue?

A: Yes, the winds do pick up usually in the late morning to early afternoon, like..11-12 noon. Traffic can be an issue, especially during this time of the year. With not only with giant container ships crusing about...you have to deal with sailboats, jetskiers, yachts, sportboats...etc..

*insert any relevant noob question here....

Cabrillo is a good place to start your kayak fishing career, many of us have. It's a great place to fish at times. Easy access, easy launch, no surf, availability of bait, close proximity of the fishing grounds, lots of good structure to explore and fish. All around it's one of the best and easiest places you can go.

Downside is that there is No yellowtail or seabass there...not say'n it's not possible but highly unlikely. But there's more to life than just seabass and yellows!

Have fun out there!

Where's the boat launch at? I surf launched last time and saw a few others do the same. If it's where I think it is, it'll take a good hour to paddle to the kelp, unless maybe you have a hobie or a jet ski!
