La jolla boat launch closed...
pipes off La Jolla streets. This will include the drain pipe off La Jolla Shores boat launch. This project is supposed to start next week. Looks like the boat launch may be closed all the way up to May/June 2014. Does anyone know more on this? |

It wouldn't surprise me. I've made it a mission to fight a red curb parking violation and have taken pictures of multiple cars parked illegally where I did since Oct. 1st. Last week I found the curb at 2100 avenida de la playa marked with some numbers that weren't there before and the middle of the street with signage as well. I showed the picture to someone at the S.D department of street maintenance and she said all those marking are from a utilities company. Below is a picture of that location.

Gary , I saw your vehicle the day you got the ticket, barely over the red. That sucked.

We are all talking about the same parking spot, but Julie and I parked there about a week or so before Gary got his ticket, and we too had some red on the curb that was just inside the back bumper. The problem is the missing part of the red paint on the outside of the curb. There's some on top, but if the city wants to make money on parking violations, then it should give the taxpayers a fighting decision to make a good choice by seeing a well painted and clearing defining line of where the red zone begins and ends. That's definitely not the case here. We spent 5 minutes deciding whether to leave our vehicle behind, inching forward as much as possible a couple of times, still the bumper was in some red, just not red that covered both the top and side of the curb. We were clear of the well defined area. Still we hem-hawed about leaving it. If we'd have gotten a ticket, we'd have taken photos on the spot, and we'd be in Gary's shoes with fighting it. Again good luck Gary, and may patience be with you. The last and only time I fought a speeding ticket in court, I won. We hope and think you deserve to win this one, too. That red zone is way too ambiguous. Aaron P.S. Sorry for side-jack on this thread, but rightfully fighting tickets is more important than not being able to fish one location for awhile. If that happens, it sucks, and we'll all have to launch from other spots and fish other locations. At least it's winter-time, but with a little foresight the idiots in charge should have started a project like this just when summer ended before the winter storms were on the way.

good news...bad news
I have contacted Arnold Schwarzenegger via twitter - he told me that he will personally make sure that all of the Hobie Pro Anglers are granted full beach access rights to the launch. BUT he did say that all other smaller kayaks will be required wheel their kayaks from the north parking lot near the lifeguard tower during the pipeline construction.... one noted exception was was going to be granted for Greg Andrew's Kayak...apparently Greg won some state recognized service award for rescuing a congressman's kid while kayak surfing in after landing a big halibut.

I call B.S. without Greg's GoPro underwater footage of rescue. Signature hat must not come off during rescue. Jim

It's about saving everyone else's asses too. He's doing what we would have had to do, circumstances changed. What's the fricken' problem with that? You aside... We're not out for the good of our ourselves. It's not about a parking tutorial, but to save a fellow kayak fisherman/woman from getting a similiar ticket, certainly if we can avoid it, and fighting it themselves.. Getting a ticket violation ruins a good day of fishing, enough said, maybe.

A. It's just a joke...so laugh. It's good for the soul
B. if ya don't fit there, don't park there I've been ticketed for parking in the street sweeper zones. I was well aware too. Sometimes a ticket is the last thing on my mind..... I apologize if my sarcasm is undetectable via text. There's no surf and the weather sucks, just making playful jabs.

That blue truck should be ticketed.
One for being in the red zone and two for being candy blue |

But, you see Gary isn't laughing nor would we if we'd have been ticketed. Seriously, we'd agree with you about "if you ya don't fit there, don't park there", if that location was properly marked. It is not. Unless you have an MG midget, or a VW bug, or a vehicle of that size, the question will remain, where does the red zone end? So, the other questions get raised. Was paint being removed, to expand it for usage beyond ultra small vehicels, and when that was done, they just did a piss-poor job? Or has it not been properly painted in the last 2 decades to allow motorists a fair shake? You knew you violating the law when you were ticketed, again, not the case here. We took a chance, that they would not ticket on such a shady, "real shady" job of red paint on the curb, and we got lucky. Thanks to Gary, others now know, it's a risk that's probably not worth taking unless you are one who has deep pocketbooks, or you are one who hates to be wrongly cited, and feel it's worth fighting. I want to thank Gary publicly for coming forward. We were fortunate to get the information first hand after visiting his home from an offer he extended to us, which we couldn't refuse. I think Gary deserves to win his battle, that's all, I'm done. Aaron
