La Jolla Shores today, 7/27

I launched from LJ Shores at about 5:30am. It was the first time I have launched from a beach with any surf. The surf wasn’t large but it was big enough to flip at least one guy that was heading out when I did.

I tried to catch some bait fish but kept pulling up mackerel that seemed a bit large to use as live bait, but I kept them anyway and threw them in the tank. I caught a few sardines and a couple small lizard fish as well on the same Sabiki rig.

I quickly caught several small-ish Calicos using the Lizard fish and fishing off the bottom. All but one were undersized, so it was a catch and release day for me.

Did anyone catch any Yellowtail out there today? I didn’t see anyone catching any squid.

It was very overcast but I had a nice time anyway. I barely managed to not have a yard sale when I landed back at the beach.

Congrats on the calicos. I launched around 3:30 am and making squid wasn't too hard. Shortly after making bait I hooked into a good yellowtail and got it to the side of the yak and farmed the gaff attempt and it took off quick and broke me off.

Not to mention on the way in I must have provided the tourists with a good laugh as I made a yard sale out of everything in the yak. I was able to recover everything except my glasses and flashlight.

I caught some squid but no tail action. I saw some thing on my meter cruising up and down the water column. whatever it was chewed on my squid, but I didn't hook up. Only thing I saw on my meter all day besides bait.

dmrides, Congrats on catching the two yellowtails. If you don't mind me asking, how large were the mackerels you used for bait and how did you rig them?

I have caught bass a few different times with Lizard fish. They seem to work for better for me at least for bass, especially when all I have is a bait tank full of HUGE sardines.
