Encounter with Mex Navy
Just bought an X-Factor, yesterday was my second outing. Met up with Craige (also X-Factor) and headed out to SI.Got bait, Around 7pm move towards bait barge, first bait down, grumpy sandie Next bait, again grumpy shows up. Start a drift, short hali, second driftt something messing with my bait,SWING I'm on. first legal hali on the yak. 30". Being the newbie I am, no lights to run at night. I channel my inner McGyver, stick a flashlight in an empty water bottle secured to one of my rods Start back to SI around 9pm, I lookup my flashlight more like a candle.Full moon decent visibility Pretty uneventful, UNTIL, i see this fast appoaching shadow bearing down on me. I can barely get an OH SHIT out when a pelican barely misses be and crashes into my rods. Flashlight into the drink, Admiral Pelican does a few cart wheels on the water and dissappears. Made it back to SI boat ramp All in all, a decent learning experince. |

In the dark he thought you were on a P.A., he was coming In to do a carrier landing. They use the rods like the catch net at the end of the flight deck. Pelicans are Naval bombers, I've seen it in person. Watched a squadron of them take out six tourists at La Jolla in June.

i am lucky it was just a single, i don't think things would been so funny had there been a few more behind him. i think i might need some kind of windshield to deflect these aerial assualts

The sombrero he was wearing gave it away. based on his poor navi skills he might be the one behind all the beached pangas up north.

Speaking of pelicans....I was spearfishing down in Baja two weeks ago and this guy tried to eat my head multiple times. I got dive bombed, pecked at in the water, and then he followed me onto the boat. All in all, it must have been 30-40 minutes that this thing followed me around. Trying to eat my hands, arms, and head.
Pretty funny when you come up from a dive and all of sudden something grabs your head. The pelican literally had my entire head in his beak/mouth? |

I've had a few close fly bys and day light touch and goes but full impact, that's bad. Glad he didn't catch you in the head or had a whole air wing with him. Pelis are magnificent birds but it seams no matter how stupid and clumsy you think they are, they are stupider and clumsier than that. Mike
