Yes it was/is an "awesome hali"! If you are catching shorts, it's only a matter of time till you catch the legal. If you are catching shorts, then you know what you are doing as far as what the bites feel like etc... that is half the battle with 'buts. I had been coming off a huge skunk that lasted about 3 trips . I needed that one! Now if I could only do that on my yak....

heavier gear

funny you should mention heavier gear. for the longest time, I was using 15 # flouro leaders on a 25-30# mainline mono. but I thought, why? The bay is so murky on a clear day. So that day, I was 30# mainlilne, with 30# flouro leaders. And it's a good thing, cuz he bounced off the gaff the first time in. It was the heavier line that let me land him. food for thought...
