Vail Lake with the kid
My son and I got on the water around 8:30. First time at the lake. Very nice lake with plenty of shore fishing. We pull up to the first point and see some bass crashing the surface (its sunny already) ??? what the hell? Throw a red/ orange crank and hook up on 4 bass on 4 casts. This is gonna be a nice day. My son said he wants absolutely no assistance except to tie the knots. He is casting by himself. He finally gets it down and connects on a couple nice lmb. I threw a rapalla for a nice 15 inch crappie. If you were to seriously fish and start earlier in the morning you could have a 50 fish day...easy We ended exploring the island and chasing ducks half the day. Drop shot a worm for a catfish and a carp. I used to think that someday my son will become a better fisherman than me......yeah, I think that day arrived already. about 15 bass (two were close to 3 lbs. rest dinks) 1 crappie 1 cat 1 carp OH by the way....Vail Lake is ALL FISH catch and release. HUGE SIGN Last edited by StinkyMatt; 04-09-2013 at 08:37 AM. |

Maybe we should stop inviting you and start inviting your son when we fish.

Pretty cool story and pics. The daughter had some soccer games over the weekend. Nothing better than hanging with your kid. Good job Matt!

awesome times
Stinky Matt,
Very nice! There's a deep primal satisfaction knowing that your offspring will never go hungry because of the knowledge you have passed-down to him; just like the generation before you did (I'm guessing). Every time Roman out fishes me I can't help but smile and think "my job is done here!" You know that smile. It's a long lasting smile. Awe the humility of it all! Good job Dad! |

Shore = $10
Launch = $25 Fishing with your kids is very satisfying, especially when it starts turning from "babysitting on the water with rods" to actual fishing. A great lake to get your mojo back if you have had some tough fishing in the salt lately like me. I feel like I can fish again (insert wise ass remark here) Now I need a big flat one. |

Very nice post Matt, and yes that time when you think he "might" outfish you has already come to pass, however the pride you will undoubtedly feel from now on is priceless, enjoy it, because that time is gone in an instant...nice job dad!

nice. that lake has been wfo for the past 2 months.
50 fish in a day is average for vail. a friend went 200 fish in a day last week if anyone plans on going you better get after it. the guy that owns the lake may lose it soon. if the water district buys it, its game over. |

Great post! That place looks like a lot of fun. I have always wanted to fish Vail. Does anyone know what time the gates open there?
