Its a plainfin midshipman. I've seen a few caught on plastics and bait but you might be the first on a fly. Are congratulations in order? They're called toad fish on the east coast because of the sounds they make. Their sounds were a big mystery in San Fransisco bay for years. If you've ever been diving while the males were doing their "singing" you'll never forget it. Mike

interesting fish.. it breathes air, vocalizes, and travels from the deepest depths of the ocean to come out on land.. mud flats to be specific, and spawn.

Hey my cousin filmed and narrated that video. During that time he was going to college for marine biology and now he works for DFG doing some science stuff. Btw Elkhorn Slough is a cool place to kayak, no fishing but a lot of wildlife. Good fishing outside of moss landing though

netted one in south bay. It was swimming on top. I caught it and then threw it back because it was soooo ugly .
