Total Noob

I am currently looking at picking up a kayak to do some fishing in. I am weighing the options though of a sit inside fishing vs. a sit on top fishing. Can I get a little more insight on which is better etc.. Im not really looking at venturing offshore in La Jolla or anything, it will be more for use in the bays and taking it out to El Capitan.

Thanks,

Tommy

There are alot of disadvantages to a sit inside. As you've already hinted there is a risk to launching with them in the surf, storage, and heat.

Well if you want to fish in lakes, the sit inside will have to do. Most lakes do not allow sit on tops.....but otherwise go with the SOT.

el capitan ? refugio ?

up north ? sit on top , if you are doing any kind of fishing . just my opinion . sit insides are great. that is a mans kayak . if you roll , you better know what you are doing and have some balls. probably a lot better weight transfer / displacement. . but lets be real , most users out here have sit on tops , because of advancements. unless your are into touring , i would stay away . fishing being your goal in mind . and you can find great deals on excellent sit on tops year round. good luck .

El Capitan is a San Diego reservoir/lake. They're fine with sot kayaks.

I had a wilderness sit in kayak years ago, now I have a Trident 15. It's a world of difference. There was almost no room to haul gear in a sit in, and when fully loaded, its a bitch to upright when tossed over. For fishing, spearing, exploring etc, a SOT is much better suited, plus you can't beat the price on a used one.
