Classic Fall Kayak Fishing - 10/7
I have been getting out for some of the usual shenanigans this Fall. My girls had a birthday party to attend on Sunday, so with the great weather, I jumped at the chance to put the wheels under the Hobie and get outside the surf zone for some more fresh air. I launched Sunday from Big Rock area and headed out a couple miles to my "Taco Time" reef area. The bait schools and action seemed to be a little shallower though, with lots of bait marks 110-117' and seals/birds feeding which is always a great sign. Lately I have run across some great Ling, Sheephead, Bocaccio (release most), and Red action out there. These fish will feed wildly for a period, then, just shut off completely. Rigs used are a combination of heavy bucktails, plastic, or 6 oz dropper loop style with live bait or squid on a very large circle hook. I had a few drag-ripper fish break off my 30 lb leader by getting into the rocks. (Unfortunately, my waterproof Canon camera finally died last month, so it's 'camera phone' pix for right now ... that camera shot all of my older videos located here: http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...hing%20Videos/ ) Yesterday's 13 lb sheephead and 5 lb vermillion. Both were kayak "Personal Bests" for me! Friday Night bugs:

lowpro: I can sum up the launch conditions in one picture (below)
The 'secret' is that you must launch in the 10-yard stretch at the very South end of this beach! And yes, the other end of the beach had kayaker-terrifying 6 foot shorebreak ... Notice all the surfers (black dots) in this photo, in the distance, waiting for 6-8' waves. I've said before, I don't launch into waves over 2', I'd be surfing that day!

Larry, congrats on your PBs, great fish and great eats. Thanks for the info on launching at Big Rock. We may try it someday.
How's the parking around that area, and what kind of haul do you have to do with the 'yaks to get to the beach? Thanks.

Refreshing to see that you don't use the "Extend the Arms" technique when taking photos of your fish.....

Hi Aaron,
There is generally plenty of street parking in this neighborhood. From the street, its a sloped 50 yard cement path to 3 small wooden steps. Then off a rock ledge to the sand, this ledge is only 1' right now. But can get to 10' after a big storm when the sand is gone. The launch walkway access is just north of the end of Winamar Street. You see the end of Winamar St in this video. Watch this: Big Rock Launch from the street - http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...rabicTunes.mp4 Big Rock Landing - http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...o041611009.mp4 Big Rock Launch and marginal rock fishing - http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...pB11292010.mp4 There are some other very informative videos on the video page as well, this is the best sheephead/lingcod/mix instructional video: http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...akRockfish.mp4
