La Jolla slow for me all year
We got to the offshore grounds in the early morning and started our trolling. I was 1 of 4 in the first rotation. Within a few minute my trolling rod goes off, pull in a nice Dorado, my first ever. Then we started the trolling again and another rod goes screaming from the drag ripping out. Next thing we know we've hit a jackpot of large models of Bluefin tuna. Average size probably was 55lbs. We managed to pull in 31 Blue fin, 16 of which were aprox. 60-90lbs. Not bad for most of us being out gunned by the huge Bluefin around. I lost 2 big ones that broke my 30lb flouro which cost me 1 1/2 hours of fishing time. So I grab my Seeker Inshore 8' 25lb rod with a Ocea Jigger 2001NR-PG filled with 50lb. PP and a 40lb. Seaguar flouro top shot. Not the right gear. Then I hook another good one which is in the pic. Took me 3 1/2 hrs to bring this 75lb Bluefin tuna on the boat with the excellent crew on the Dolphin II, especially Jake. Thanks. I just about passed out after the battle was done. I was completly drained. We stayed on this school for about 5 hrs. Awsome for a overnight trip Bluefin sashimi is so delicious! |

THANKS for replies.
This bite should continue for at least 2 more months. Plan to go a few more times this year, but with proper gear this time. Average sizes were easily 55lbs. Not giving up on La Jolla. Just need more time out there. |
