use a 2/0 circle hook, a 6 oz sinker and pin on a spanish mackrel and fish in 30 ' of water...

I was laughing so hard a couple of tears started to form...
Your gaff should work fine - I am also guilty of testing fishing gear with weights.......
I told the Guy I bought my Yellowfin tuna rod from that I was going to test the rod before i was going to buy it..... he said it was ok and put on some safety glasses on and I tied 100lb spectra to a 25lb barbell and lifted it before I bought it...
