It will usually look like a big suspended blob. Not hard to tell right around the yellow buoys and close to the kelp line you wont miss them if your at la jolla.

This is a bogus post please tell me this is a bogus post...
If this is real yes even you my friend have paddled over a bait ball if you've launched a kayak in any body of water that wasn't a toilet or bathtub.

What does a bait ball look like? It slightly resembles a sphere of"insert bait of choice here" swimming for its life scared shitlesss of the predators around it trying to destroy it...

I hope this doesn't come off brash but Jesus yesterday there's a guy on here claiming he's gonna rip 50 pound yellows out the kelp like blue gill in a pond today it's what's a bait ball? I just don't know what's fact or fiction on here anymore.

I'm sorry echo1er you kinda walked into this one. If you don't mind me asking, what exactly do you use your f/f for if not to make bait? Thats like the main reason for having one IMO

Dude ignore the peanut gallery. It's an honest question, and a good one.

We were all rookies once.

You'll know one if you see one. If it's below you, and shallow, you'll see the bait in the water thick, it's unmistakable. They're running all over, freaking out, it will look like millions of them.

If you see one hit the surface, again, you won't mistake it. I've been out on days where it literally sounds like it's pouring rain there is so much bait exploding on the surface. The surface will look like it's pouring rain as well, the ocean looks like it's boiling. I've seen the surface boiling up for an area the size of many football fields north of the pier in La Jolla. Makes you feel like a little kid, all kinds of excited.

On the fish finder, you will suddenly see either a thick long line, or a blob, depending on the type of fish and the size of the ball. You will see the ground, then 1/3 the way up or so there will be the cloud, like a swarm of bees looking type of cloud, then open water on top of it. That's your bait ball, the cloud.

If you've got your FF dialed you can watch your sabiki fall and stop it right in the middle of the ball and... hang on!

BTW, good video too.

Tight lines,

Willy

No matter what anyone says. Even the most seasoned fishermen on here had days when they could's catch bait at all or they had to spend half their fishing day chasing a couple baits.

Not me obviously, I usually load up my bait tank in 15 minutes.

thanks for the replies. I never seen one, only on youtube. Never fish out of Camp Pendleton / Oceanside area. I'm still learning how to use my FF.

Yup! there were alot of those baitballs in la Jolla last saturday.

There were so many lines on top of the baitballs it looked like spaghetti with meatballs on the FF.

Just to be clear, not every swarm of bait looks like a ball....

Somtimes you will see bait on the fish finder that looks like this....

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
- - - - - - - -
- - - - -- -- - -

(that is bait swimming toward something.....)

A bait ball will look like this.... and you color in the lines
---------------------------------
-------------------------------------
---------------------------------------
------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------
