Bonito in La Jolla?

Does La Jolla ever get runs of bonito? I was just thinking about this as there is just about every other so-cal fish in la jolla. Usually areas that are home to yellowtail are also home to bonies. If you dont want to say here can you pm me? Thanks

They show up occasionally. Hate catching those things when targeting yt...a big nuisance. But blue marlin like 'em.

I don't think it's a secret that it's been a couple of years since the bonies were around in any numbers or size. Some years they are so thick they are a nusence, with the small ones destroying the sibikis and the bigger ones tearing up the live mack baits. I miss them. They are good eating, hard fighters, and user friendly for kids and novices. I've caught them far off shore, right out sdie the surf, and all the way back in the Jst boat basin. I've seen 15lbres in LJ and all around the Coronado Islands. Just acres of foaming bonito of LJ Big bones on the surface iron is fun. We haven't seen the usual spring migration of the schooly YT, bonito, or the stove pipe sized cuda in a few years. We'll see the 3B's and YT again though.

I wish we had more Bonito around here. I caught a few in Kings Harbor up in Redondo beach and they're always good for a fight on light tackle.

You could spend a good 20 minutes fighting with something, and then when you finally get it to the boat, you see it's "only" a 2 lb Bonito. Those things pull like much bigger fish.
