Shelter Island - Pt. Loma 02.27.07

I wanted to fish today and I knew a storm was coming. I'm already on the Freeway, dealing with
traffic and rain and LCII calls to tell me he's bailing on fishing today. Given that it's taken me
nearly an hour to get to Pt. Loma, I decide to hit SquidCo. I ended up buying 14 new
plastics, just to try new colors, so I had to go out today.

I paddled out in what didn't seem too bad.

I fought a head wind as I paddled toward Pt. Loma for a halibut bite. At least the
7ft. flow high to low tide was helping me move along quite nicely. However,
by the time I got around Ballast Point, the wind was really whipping and the rain
was falling. I'm so glad I had on my foul weather gear. I was actually toasty.

I paddled all the way out to the ocean near the tip of Pt. Loma. I was hoping
to fish the shallows for the 'butt bite, but it wasn't happening. Too much wind and
rain. I was quickly blown over to Zuniga Jetty. Next I fought my way to the
West side of the bay so I could get out of the wind and rain.

After 2 hours and 25 minutes of non-stop paddling (from when I left Shelter Island), I finally made it back
to some shelter from the wind. I was still only at Ballast Point, but at least I was
right next to the sausage barricades. Soon the wind subsided and the sun came out,
so I paddled North past the bait docks. I was finally able to begin tossing my plastics
around without getting blown back out to sea. I was excited to try some of the
new plastics, but I had a Pearl grub on one rod and a Black grub on the other.
I tossed those while I got out the new stuff and BANG!! I got hit on the white grub.
Nice little fight for this guy. Once I got him to the yak, I found that I had a nice sized
Barred Sand Bass.

Barred Sand Bass - 3lbs. 12oz - 18.75in.

I tossed plastic for another 35 minutes and called it a day. Time to pick the kids
up from school. The sun was out and the wind had subsided.

What a great day!

Wavster,
I'm just goofing around. Not trying to piss anyone off. I just got back from a ~15 hour car ride where we caught fish smaller than that in some really nice conditions. Who is doing the report? threadjack over.

Whenever I read anyones report I always wish I was on the water instead of working.

Adi, you're classier than that.

I don't want to tick anyone off either, and I can appreciate some ribbing, but if you don't
know me or I don't know you, it comes off as arrogance.

I fish for my own enjoyment, not for anyone else's. I also don't need it for food, so I
release most of what I catch.

FWIW, I went out today to test some new colors, stormy conditions and to check out a couple of "new" spots.

Some of you guys crack me up. If this is your claim to fame, you're lame. I'm just talking
about the elitists who take this all too seriously.

MadScientist, I get the impression you are trying to insult me. You know, the ironic
thing is, I stuck up for you this morning... and I don't even know you. I stuck up for your right
to catch and keep as much as you want. If you want to insult me, do it in person, not behind some muppet avatar.

Besides, I might just paddle up next to you and park in "your" spot at LJ and fish
for surf perch with my Popiel's Pocket Fisherman.

Chill out dude, just another bass joke. The whole "elitist" thing is largely a joke as well, but irony and sarcasm are not always evident on the net I guess. You don't have to defend yourself to me or anyone else on this or any other board. It's just a silly fishing forum.

But I didn't know my muppet avatar speaks. As for the "spot" thing. My "spot" is the same as your "spot" and everyone else's "spot". Mainly, it's the spot I'm on at any given time. We should all respect each other's "spots".

Adi, you're just jealous. Tyler, don't always hop on board, I can make an ass of myself perfectly fine on my own.

Great report Wavster, but after reading the replies here and that other 3+ page long post you and some of those other bitches need to get laid.

"Can't we all just mess around?"

Definitely true. It's not a biggie to me. I was just adding to the 'Edge.

Believe me, I'm not into the bass thing either. I'd rather catch 1 good Bonito or YT then a whole day of bass fishing.

shrug it off

Dave, read thru all the smartars replies as just a bonding experience. Some are true smartass, but most are poking you in the side of the ribs out of jealousy. Your turning into a hardcore well rounded fisherman from the first time I paddled past you in LJ. Being stuck inland I can appreciate your lengthly and detailed reports, as well as others that put the time in to describe their day on the water. Being a "fisherman" is more than catching bait, putting one high & one low, and showing off a yellowtail. There's many kinds of fish on our coast and inland waters. No matter what kind of fishing you do, the feeling is still the same when the rod loads up.

Hey I'm cool with the ribbing. It doesn't get to me or change how or where I fish.

...as Brad said, sarcasm doesn't always show well on the 'net.

...besides, I still might toss an iron into someone's YT boil

Thanks for the report, I've never fished the bay off a kayak, only from my boat or just off the dock, and have caught some healthy bass. I'm sure the mobility from the yak would be awesome.

Dorado50,

Your location says LJ shores. What's it looking like at the launch right now? I want to go out. I know the wind is howling.

While we are on the subject, I'd like to clarify something. I almost never keep bass. In fact, I think I have killed all of 2 sand bass in my life. One to eat (found it not good), and one for lobster bait (found it didn't work well). I've killed around a dozen calicos for the occassional tacos or tournaments. I've never killed a spotty. I like to joke about bass but in reality I probably account for a lot less mortality than the serious C&R fisherman. The only fish I've ever killed and not made an effort to see eaten was a barracuda for last years CTF, and that was mainly because it had been in the sun for hours before I got back to shore. My rape of the ocean this year so far = 2 YT & 2 lobster. But let's hope that changes soon.
