LJ Monday and today.
Not this year, the squid have come and gone and come again it seems. I personally don't see what all the secrecy is about. The magic squid bite of past years hasn't materialize . I think the fish are so full of squid from the 6 months of them coming and going it doesn't matter this year. I love fishing La Jolla in the winter. Its cold, and overcast, and though the fish are there you really have to put in work to get one. Time on the water is the real secret. I went out Monday and today(Wed.) Monday I didn't launch tell around 10 am. I was yo yoing on bait balls and around the lobster traps. Lot of bait. I would get egg sacs on my iron. I guess earlier there was a hook up or two, but I didn't see any fish catched. Nothen special it seem. Today I launched before light, with several others. I went out to were everyone else going and tried to get a squid or two. I didn't see to many people get any either. I didn't see any hook ups in the little group of yakers. A PB hooked a BSB. I moved on after a while to deeper water and started yo yoing, and fishing a drooper rig with a big ass mac down deep. Late afternoon after most have left and the wind kicking up some waves, my drooper rig goes off. After a short run the fish comes off. I reel in the line and my mac is still on but with a crushed head. I don't have no bait so I drop the dead mac down and try and jig up another Mac with my other pole. I let the jig drop down the 140ft and bam the bait rig goes off. I feel head shakes and its ripping line from the little penn 500. With my other hand I am trying to reel in the Jig rig and still holding on to the running fish on the bait rig. I got crossed upped and allowed slack in the line and that fish got off. Damn. It was like a wash tub out there now, so I fish my way in and ended at dusk on the beach. Are there squid? maybe. Is there a big run of yellowtail? Not really. All I got in two days of fishing were jumbo macs. There are alway yellowtail at La Jolla I believe. They have to be earned. I understand why a week long bite might be kept under the hat if its really a hot bite, but don't start playing that Locals only no kooks stuff like the surfers did when I was a kid. I will drive the 200 mile round trip again soon to fish La Jolla, and you can bet I am going to post any pictures of nice fish I should get lucky enough to catch. Zip code don't make any one special. Every single fishing trip should begin with:
I am GOING to catch fish. I will probably catch MANY fish. I am good and have learned a lot so I will likely catch a HUGE fish. I know before EACH trip I am thinking like that. On the way home, I lick my wounds and plot the next attack! Tight lines on the SECRET bite, wherever it may be! |
