VHF radio channels?

i got a Cobra VHF radio and it has preset channels, 7, 9 and 16 i think. i never hear anything on these channels. but i do catch the coasties on 14 sometimes along with some chinese guy. been using it all week to catch the weather and its pretty cool to be able to do that. but im lost as to wich channels i need on the water. and what channel is everyone else on out there?

i've caught glimpses of them in some pics and ive seen chan. 71, 19, 5, and so on. not really a pattern.

ive only had a radio for a couple weeks myself and only used it twice. I can tell you that 16 is the emergency channel in case of a distress call. From what ive seen 72 and 68 seem to be commonly used. And i know if your in DP several local guys who fish here a lot have recommended 72 to me when fishing locally. Besides that im about as lost as you are.
