Darknachos and the wind of the howling wolf.

Rob, George, Greg, Matt and I started the morning at 5:20am . Erick joined us a little later. The wind was already lightly blowing from the west. WHICH IS NEVER A GOOD SIGN. The Surf was still high at our local beaches, so I had ended up at Cabrillo.

I turn on my radio, and I FORGOT to charge it. No radio for Frank.

We set out to sea and met Mike at the bait barge, he loads us up on sardines and we pay him his dues with a tip and set a course Halibut island.


George, Rob, and I set on a different course then Greg and Matt. The current was ripping straight out to the ocean. They day started out pretty fishy. My first catch was an 18" Hali and then i caught a huge monster, but i let the hali take to much line and when i tried to set the hook he got off.


By 9 am i saw Greg and Stinkymatt coming back. I said to myself i can't believe they had already caught their limits. THOSE HALIBUT MONSTERS!!!!

But stinky matt looked different, he had a look i had not seen before. A look of being cold, like he had tried to take off his stinkiness literally. ( Ill let Matt finish this story)

So by 10am the WIND WAS BLOWING FROM THE WEST HARD CORE, i started paddling in and somehow ended by Angels Gate. The wind and whitecap currents were pushing me to catalina. So at this point i decided to stop fishing and decided to put my x-factor in over drive. I paddled half way in, but it seems like i was paddling in place I was literately going less than 1mph paddling at full force. The waves were crashing over my bow and washing my face every few secs.



Then i look back and I see Erick coming to my rescue, my savior, He tied my rope to his stern so he could help me stay on course when i got tired of paddling. At one point the wind started blowing and turned my kayak the opposite facing direction, ( i guess i shouldn't of taken a bite of my sandwich. i pulled on the rope that was towing me and Made Erick kayak go backwards. I took one last bite of my sandwich drank some water and gave my x-factor full power.

Thanks Erick if it wasn't for you, i would probably be by the bait barge. LOL



I might not be able to catch a lot of fish like some of the masters can, my fish are few and far in between.

i almost feel bad for sardines, i mean literally everything in the ocean eats them. Need to try dragging some at my local holes for some big flatties nice job.

i was just reminiscing today about my time paddling back to cabrillo from the lighthouse and the wicked wind that almost gave me no ground.
was prob my toughest hour or 2 of paddling ever

Greg, you and Matt couldn't have left a minute sooner.

My entire body is sore from the bumping, the thumping and the peddling and why does the peddle back always seems longer when you have no fish on board? This is the worst I've ever seen it, we had a few moments where wakes were coming from no particular direction. When I finally landed my legs were weak but it was nice to be able to stretch, I was in the water from 530ish until 2pm.

1.....If you have used a hobie for a long time...YOU ARE SPOILED! I was using Greg's long, sleek topedo looking kayak since mine is out for repairs. That thing was fast and about 12 inches wide. At the end of the day and the uphill battle to get back to shore my arms were screaming at me,

"You stupid idiot! What the hell? We don't work, we haven't worked out in years!"

Let's just say it was a multiple Advil night and I am typing this very gingerly.

My hat off to the guys that use that stick paddle thing, real men!




2.......So I am battling this 4 foot class Hali in the middle of Cabrillo..........YEAH RIGHT! Lets just say that a giant (12inch) wave surprised me and flipped my ass while crossing the channel. After Erick calls everyone to give them the funny news he helps collect all the floaties around me, I flip the kayak and climb back on that thin stick of plastic.

"Did anyone see it besides Erick?" Oh shit there is Greg with a smile on. Damn witnesses.

Where my pliers at? Crap

Where is my knife? Crap

Where is my sinker box? Crap

Where is my (the only unleashed rod) brand spanking new Black Gold 30? Crap





The water was a very comfortable 61 degrees.




I had my PFD on as always, so flipping back up was not a big deal, but just remember always be prepared and leash or stow even the smallest little items.


OH and I did NOT catch a fish.

Believe it or not, it was worse wind today, but it came in later. The beach area looked like a sand storm today. I knew I should have said something about using that extra seat pad as soon as I saw it (sorry Matt). Hope the fish helped nourish those tired muscles lol.

10 hours on the kayak treadmill called Cabrillo
2 legals and a big fat one that broke my heart in the kelp


One of the highlights of the day was radioing bay watch to rescue a couple of kayakers who were being blown to Long Beach, then while reloading on some bait, Bait barge Bill and I see 4 people walking 3 kayaks back in...

actually 2 were carrying one kayak and the other 2 were dragging their kayaks,
wish I could have got a pic
those yaks are going to be recyclables by the time the made it back to the beach

Damn, I saw a few people launching yaks on the beach as I paddled in. I thought to myself that they better know what they are doing because in 5 minutes they were going to be beyond range of swimming back. It was easily blowing 20 mph at the time. They are real lucky the surf has subsided some cause they would have never made it back along the breakwall with a decent swell and near high tide. Good lookng out for the rookies Don.

After giving it some consideration;

I think that my bait tank which we had to mickey mouse to fit was the culprit. It was placed way up high and the 5 gallons (40 pounds) acted like big weight going from side to side across a wave.
