Is the current still ripping?

Any reports from the water today? I'm a total noob and was going to head out tomorrow morning, but don't have a partner and don't want to fight a fast southward current.

If you see little or no kelp at the surface, don't go south past the condo and you will not have a problem.

Nice to meet you too Ryan. After our 10 min conversation and half mile drift, I got a phone call for another 10 mins and half mile drift. So it took me about 3 hours to get to the condo

Greg, quit making it sound like the current is what got you....

Its the giant slab of meat hanging on the side of your kayak that slows you down.

The mirage drive will help you keep place if not even give you forward advantage., I was out all morning and was a constant battle with the current (Using a stick with the wide ends on it). I would paddle 1/2 mile past an anchored boat, which I used as my marker and within 5-7 minutes I was right there. Between the shore and the kelp beds it wasn't as bad, but I definitely got my work out for the day.

watch out for the currents!

I paddle my yak

I am strong, have endurance...

One day I got caught in strong current to the south, and I worked my ass off just to get back to launch!! In fact, when I realized how strong the current got, I pulled in my line and stopped fishing! I turned on my GPS, and realized, I am moving only 1-2 mph at best, and at times was moving zero mph! (in the bay I can paddle over 5 mph for short distance... do the math!!)

If you Kayak, pay attention to this... If you paddle, pay extra attention, as hobbies have a "gear reduction" advantage along with using bigger muscles and no wind drag on paddles!

Hobbies are not super fast, but they are like a low geared truck that will not stall..... and they are steady and hands free... hard to beat for fishing and currents... (Damn, am I going to have to buy a hobbie!?!?!?)

I only say this for any any newbies out there... pay attention. Know your limits, and use common sense...

And to the Kid.... No smart ass comments on the hobbie thing!!

Well to bad i'm going to bag on you. Why don't you quit your whining about oh my arms hurt wah wah and just buy the hobie already. Cowboys must not belong on the water. LOL But seriously forget about the current we have a MASS RED TIDE NOW! Hopefully by the tourney it goes away!
