to make you feel better...
you dint miss chit!
the weather sucked...
the fishing sucked...
the food sucked...
the traffic sucked...
the slug bite sucked...
there were no Cbass ot YT...
everyone got seasick...
there was upchuck all over the place...
the only stinkin fish caught were boccacio and halibut!
and we all know how boring that kind of fishing can be....
you know...
mindlessly dragging a sardine around for hours....
hoping and praying for even a raked bait...
or fishing 300 feet deep...on bass gear...
getting a cramp in your forearm from winding 300 of loine up...
for...for a...no f$%kn way...
BOCCACIO!...
that's the trip you missed...
go back to sleep, nothing to see here!

RIIIIGHT!

pics to follow when I have time!
we most definitely missed you brother, Rob!
but it's true about the slugs...no go!

I don't think anyone took the open slots. There were only 17-18 yaks on board.

No love on the slugs for me either, but there was some good quality on the weather side. I was hopin to meet you and get some tips on fishin those things.

Didnt take enough pics, but here's a few...oh and the parts from Yakrider about no YT, no Cbass, the wide open rockfish and hours hopin for a halibut bite is also partly true tho...at least for me. First mothership down, and will do better next time.

One definate is that the Islander is top notch...boat and crew!

Gary

Yeah, day two was good but you should have seen it on day one.....wasn't all fun and games. I think I managed to get some pics of day one before my battery went dead, I'll check my camera and post them later.

Islander

Thanks OEX for setting this up and the cool schwag and Islander As usual great service and doing your very best to put us on fish-all Calico hunters had plenty of action and a few flatties caught as the photos show and some lost
That's right I lost a good one right at the gaff-forgot to back my drag off and splash on the face and gone-The whole boat was watching and shared my pain. Thank god nobody had a video camera then-
I can still hear my cry echoing off the lee side of SCI
I can't go this weekend or I would jump right on. I know some guys couldn't make it and that's the way it goes but please try to support them in the future-they need us and there are only certain number of us crazies that can do these trips.
Also they do a great standup operation so when the tuna show give them a try you know they will treat you right.

Also I hear a rumor they are setting up a late October 2011 SCI or Cortez Bank trip-I already called OEX and tried to sign up-he who hesitaes is lost

Thanks for the reports and photos and great company on the trip.

Dave

I spent both days hunting calico bass, no rockfish, no halibut, all bass. First day started out great, with a 4.75lb bass about 5 casts in, but I couldn't improve on that as we battled then wind.

Second day, conditions where much nicer, but the bass where a complete no show in the morning. The afternoon was slow but good enough to keep me in the kelp, nothing weighed but 3lbs seems about right for the best this day.

Was a great trip, exhausting but great. Very cool bunch of guys. Have to tip my hat to Josh and Mark, who were very free with pointers and tips for the less experienced calico hunters, and great fun on the water. Hell, I was even mayor for a time, but the terms are short!

If I can swing the fall trip, I'm in, but regardless I will be back out next year for round 2.

Thanks to OEX,the boys on the Islander (seriously, these guys work hard keeping 18+ kayaks moving), and my fellow yakkers, who all made this trip memorable.

First Day, first fish,

Misc fish

Josh with one, 0.5 seconds before it destroyed his thumb!

First day scenery

Proof I was there

More scenery

Lunch time pit stop

followed by a shout of "Five Dolla!"

It also was my first trip out to SCI and I have to say the it was the best boat and crew I have ever fished with. I got a few calicos on the first day but didnt take a pics of the donkey that I caught first thing cuz I figured it would be WO all weekend. I did get plenty of taco meat for the freezer tho and I will be back.

Second day fish was a earned one

GOOD times

Joe

Wow! another stellar adventure put on by the Islander crew...
the weather coulda been a little better, but all in all..not too bad...
always good to put a face to some of the names we see on the boards...
great to meet some new friends as well...Paul, Brian, good to fish with you guys...we must do it again!

Saturday
Dave E first off the boat!

Pierpont and I were the next ones in...
we headed straight for the boilers...
and on my second cast, I was reminded why I wait all year for bass fishing SCI...Boomskakalaka...5 3/4 lber on the second cast...

graeat way to start the day...
kinda pissed Mark off, but he was rewarded shortly there after...
see the smile a nice tugger puts on a guys face...
how can one not be happy whilst a pullin" on a early mornin' tugger...

not to be outdone, another 5 1/2 lber...BOOOYA...

and then, on the next boiler, almost a new PB for me...
so close...I need a 7 lber for a new PB, this one was 6 3/4lbs...
and he almost pulled me into the boiler, were it not for the Mirage drive, I'd have been swimming...

and then, I was realling in my swimbait, and the line goes slack...
I'm snoozin' big time, and then suddenly realize, hey...that might be a fish!
sure enough, a bullet headed right for me...
this one's for you Anacapabob! 7lbs of pure devilstick!

the conditions were not right for the surface action on the slug, howver, I did manage to bag a few on the iron, nothing huge, but it's always cool to get 'em on the iron! the dang fish were just barely bigger thatn the Tady 45...

another 5 lber...

and hows 'bout a cabazon (I think)...really cool lookin' dude!

another happy camper...

more boiler action, 4lbs even....

and another...

that was Saturday, all in all there were 47 calicos, 2 sugarbass, 1 baracuda, and one cabazon...all succesfully released...
oh...and I took mark's five dollars with my 6 3/4 lber...

Sunday
slow or practically non existant uphill current early in the morning was good for a handfull of calicos...Pierpont in the weeds...

then the current died...
thought what the hell, lets go get some taco meat, so we whacked a few chucks...

didn't take too long and the current started uphill again so we moved back into the kelp and in the shallows...200 feet sucks!
ah yes...back to the bassin'...
this is AZYakNewb, AKA Brian...really cool guy from Arizona came out to see what all the hooey was about on these here mothership trips...
Brian love to git him sum largemouth bass and couldn't wait to pull on a nice calico...I guess he got er dun! REally good fishing with you Brian!

the last few hours of the day were spent bhuckin' plastics right up on shore...man...only at SCI can you fish for calicos in two feet of water...
it's unbelievable how much fun it is to fish so close to shore...
I've been on several trips where guys have had that experience, but this was my first time...man...that was cool!

say good by little guy!

I cannot wait to get back there again...there is nothing like it!

oh...and Mark got my five dollars on day two with a 3.5 lber!

Thanks for the reports guys, sounds like a great trip. I did the 1.5 day in April, I think the first trip of the season. It was just a great trip all around with an excellent boat and crew.

As for the fishing, it seems the Halibut and Bass fishing are pretty much always working... and there are some real huge fish. Luck with timing is a huge part for any other species, but WSB and YT are bound to be WFO one of these trips and I hope to be on that one

Will definitely be booking for next year probably sometime in June.

Great trip. New PB for calico 23", didnt get a weight but she was a pig.

Watching Heath land his first halibut after he got broke off in the kelp earlier was great. It got me off the hook for "catching his"
My 2 butts came 10 minutes before Heath's and 10 minutes after George landed his.

The islander crew is great every time. Cant wait to do it agian, i hope thats in the fall!
